All the reports I've read lead me to believe it was a chlorine gas, not sarin. That makes a HUGE difference in the perpetrator. Rebels/ISIS/Moderates (call them what you like) likely would not be able to make quantities of sarin unnoticed, however, chlorine gas is easy to make. The reports of foaming at the mouth and yellow clouds are consistent with chlorine gas, not sarin.

Russia are an ally of the US in the fight against terrorism, which is why Russia and the US are in Syria. It is agreed upon to warn each other of such things. The goal was not to kill anyone. It was to send a message. It would not have been a good message to intentionally fire on Russian military.

And the shared information with Russia is built into the standard military protocol, and the military notified the Russian military. Trump did not call Putin.
