If by signature of life you mean oxygen in the atmosphere, don't be too confident. There may be other explanations for oxygen.

This is not correct. The presence of water is only one precondition for life. There could be lots of others that are not fulfilled. My blog discusses a lot of them.

Why on Earth would people riot and loot or anything similar if some astronomers said they think they found oxygen on some planet's atmosphere and it could mean a possible place for life? I think they would just ignore it.
