Rome may have turned up before the Vikings, but it was the Norse who taught us most about keeping ourselves in proper order.

Now, now, my unhygienic friend, let's not try to subvert history.

Aquae Sulis (A.K.A. the city of 'Bath'):

Archaeological evidence shows that the site of the Roman baths' main spring may have been treated as a shrine by the Britons.

We learned you good.

And yet, when the Norse arrived, they taught us how to properly care for our hair. Let me ask you, how effective was Roman hygiene, if it took the Vikings to come and teach us how to properly care for our appearance.

Furthermore, there is significant evidence to suggest that ectoparasites like head and skin lice, as well as intestinal worms, actually became MORE common, not less, during the Roman occupation of Britain. There is speculation that this may have been because the water in Roman bath houses was not changed often enough, meaning parasites would actually dwell in the water, waiting to acquire new hosts. Alongside that, it is speculated that although sewerage was kept separate to drinking water, it was often used to fertilise soil for agricultural purposes, and not left long enough before use in this regard, causing gut parasites to travel with the fertiliser, onto the resulting crop, and then be eaten by a person, causing yet more infestation.

This information is all a result of careful archeological examination of Roman sites, undertaken in the last couple of years.

You regressed between our departure and their arrival. No tonsorial parlors, no
pompadours for you.

It does seem to appear, from my last visit to London, that you have somewhat recovered.

Good point. There are degrees of 'evil', obviously. There are degrees of intelligence involved as well.

The Brits, smartly, built their empire on cultures that were vastly weaker than their own. The Germans tried taking over peer or near peer cultures and nations. Of course, one could argue there were no 'new worlds' left for them to attempt it.

Besides, the national based 'empires' have a tough time with all the coalitions that exist these days.

The Corporate empires seem to have carte blanche....

Actually, the British Empire was the least exploitative and brutal that came out of Europe in the last (say) 500 years. In the main, the closing of Empire left stability and the tools for democratic government. The French, Spanish, German, Belgium and Portuguese empires while smaller were somewhat worse.

If you want deeply repressive and exploitative empires you could start with the Soviet Union, Ottoman, China, and Japanese et al. Some of the African and South/Central American empires were based on brutality and particularly extreme. How far back? Roman? Mongol?

Yeah but what would have been better is if you could enjoy all those same things without having had caused so much grief and tragedy in the world.

It's all a bit of a moot point now though, our empire days are long gone, and we are currently facing bigger issues like simply holding the kingdom together while leaving the EU.
Again, no pride or shame about the empire with me, it died before I was born.

The British empire was not just pure evil. It was mostly pure defeat !
Let's not forget that every UK actions led to wars that weakened the west, especially Europe, to the extent that the power moved gradually to the US after WW1 and WW2.

Nowadays with globalism being the re-incarnation of British imperialism, the EU and NATO is into such level of delusional state, that they believe they have the upper end on every aspect.... too bad they are in the process of losing in technological terms to China and Russia.
