China has banned wearing veils as part of a major crackdown on what it sees as religious extremism in the western province of Xinjiang.

The measure, which comes into effect Saturday, also bans "abnormal" beards and names, as well as other "extremist signs." Forcing others to wear veils is also forbidden.

Xinjiang, China's westernmost region, is home to the Uighurs, a Muslim group which claims to face discrimination from the Han Chinese.

The law also failed to explain what constituted an "abnormal" beard or name, but suggested that they encouraged "religious fanaticism."

According to regional officials the policy harks back to speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2014, in which he said religious extremism of "ethnic separatists" in Xinjiang threatened national security.

Ok.

Congratulations Radical Islam!!
You've done the impossible...
You have made a texas born conservative sympathize with communists..

The Chinese must all be right wing Christians...oh wait, that's right....they hate religion...
Perhaps the Chinese are simply people with eyes and ears who see and hear what Islam practices and preaches...

Perhaps china needs obama to tell them that Muslims are peaceful...

How do you pronounce "George W Bush "in mandarin???
Because he is the reason Islam has targeted America[and China] for extinction..
Or was it the crusades when knights of Europe attempted to drive the Islamic hoardes from jerusalem and Israel??

Either way, the Turkic Muslim Uighur people are at war with the Han Chinese and liberals will be very conflicted on who to side with:
communists or Islamists??

Not too bright are these Chinese leaders. Shaving a beard and removing a veil doesn't make someone "peaceful", if that's not what they want to be. In fact, it probably emboldens them to be more hate-filled and determined to attack someone or something.

Not a bad idea since Xingiang borders predominately Muslim countries. How effective it will be remains to be seen. Would the CIA/ISIS try to destabilize China like Syria?

If you're so intellectually effete as to be inflamed by such legislation then your mentality is too bereft to exist in a modern society…
Go back to the dirt farms in the Middle East where sensibilities reside squarely in the Stone Age and mysticism mixed with fanaticism is commonplace..

Muslim culture is huge in western china, it goes way, way, way back, not sure if this is a good idea, I mean it's ingrained into a lot of heritage to the point where most of the food in Western China has heavy Islamic influence tied to it.

But, knowing China what ever they enforce, will work, with a heavy iron fist.

In China its just a reason to arrest and detain someone. Its not meant to change the people the arrest and torture takes care of that.

The reason hiding facial features is becoming illegal is because it defeats the facial recognition software in cameras.

here, there, everywhere eventually.

I don't think you are giving the Chinese government enough credit here. I can almost assure you it isn't nearly as tame as this article makes it seem. If this is the public face of this new law, I am willing to bet they are rounding up dissenters and disappearing them behind the scenes already. Just way too many people over there to allow the possibility of a fundamentalist movement to take hold and spread. The proverbial nipping it in the bud. On top of that a lot of the western provinces tend to be much poorer than the coast and manufacturing areas so combine that fundamentalism with extreme poverty and you have a pretty good recipe for Jihad.

Chinese people are those of a people that have come from a spirit of the light of happiness. They don't and don't want a dark spirit to invade their way of thinking. One must live in peace , not hate, and kill because of their fk'n stupid way of mental disease and kill because you don't abide by my absolute rule of thinking. Go after them and exterminate them like America should do with the domestic terrorist called "gangs".

Beard and veil removal eliminates the visual boundaries between Muslim and Chinese and may well be intended to provoke those who are troublemakers. After enough arrests and reeducation camps [which could be fatal] those harboring plans for revolt or conflict will be eliminated from the population in a Darwinistic fashion leaving only those who will go with the program. The Chinese Ministry of State Security is pervasive and can be very persuasive.

You are wise to eat from your backyard.
It is there that one sees the hope of light for their children not to be spoiled upon the evils of the govt control of "you must think this way".

I still subscribe to the idea that separation of church and state here in the US was designed to be a first step towards abandoning ALL religion.

Frankly, only fools believe in children's stories. Allowing people with a child's mind to succeed in society can only lead to the downfall of that society.

Quit raising fools, let religion die.
Humans could survive a few more generations before becoming locusts, but if we only encouraged thought, we might get farther.

Give our species a chance, stop religion.

If some leader forced you to remove a veil, or shave your beard, you'd be happy with that? Not me! Oh well..to each his own!

No your wrong. Only a fool things a pile of fools gold is wealth while a wayward wanderer will reckognize the fools treasure for what it is. Foolishness.

When Christ died for the sacrifices of man and he spoke unto our father it was for all of us weather you believe in it or not. And weather you believe in it or not doesn't have a bearing on the truth that is The word.

Drunk on ale the, founding Fathers might have said all sorts of things as per the fashion of there day. But on there deathbeds their are no atheists. Even Thomas Jefferson became a Christian in the end. Was HE a fool? I thought not!

Yeah, I don't think most posters even know where -- or rather, what cultures -- the Uighur ethnic group originates from and what sets it apart from the dominant culture in China in the first place, which is Han. They see "Muslim" in there somewhere, and think "Wee, there's our scapegoat again!" Except Uighurs & Turkic ethnic groups in general have been a thorn in China's territorial side as long as they've been there, it's the nature of the region regardless of era. Just about every iteration of China, no matter where the empire's borders fell at the time, had some conflict or another with any given Turkic group in the region, not just the Uighurs -- and this was pre-Islam to begin with.
