Wow, thanks to mysterioustranger and uncommitted for bringing a different perspective and for the extra interesting info.

I truly did not sense any exploitation when watching.. in fact, I kind of "fell in love" (agape) with several of the characters- especially the black man with no limbs- I just admired his perserverence and he also looked like a fun person to know.

Again, to me the movie held a mirror up for the audience to see their own freakishness.

But I can definitely see the tragedy involved as well.
