Learn something small and insignificant that you can reach easily first. I recommend something easy, but useful.
Learn to perceive chakras. You'll need a couple of willing people who will work with you, though.
It's generally worthless, but it's a way to get started. You need to learn alternate perception to start, that's an easy way to get into it.
eta: you might want to also get into meditation to get tuned up for alternate perception. It's not necessary, but it'll help you learn grounding and
centering.
