It seems Donald Trump is a hardliner on Russia and he means business. However, I think this is a bad approach. Crimea is a done deal for Russia. Several million Russian citizens there. On top of that, Crimea is majority ethnic Russian and it has been disputed territory since the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 due to the fact that Khrushchev took it out of the Russian Soviet republic and give it to the Ukrainian Soviet republic.

That is a false narrative and you offer an extreme clickbait slanted site as back up.

This is one of the very few things Trump is doing correctly.

Let's see if this is just lip service.

If he does hold the sanctions in place, and if Putin has any info on Trump, it will be released. So we will see if Putin has that or not.

But what I really suspect is that there is a behind the scenes deal going on that none of us will ever find out the details to.

Well I know they have been trying, but this is the first chink in the armour I have seen.
God help us all if McCain gets any foothold - I'd rather have Hillary with her finger on the button than McCain (or any of those other cretinous war mongering criminals in the Republican party)

That has been a concern of mine since he was elected or him having a suicide event. I too have noticed subtle if not overt policy changes with regards to troops and bases overseas. In his defense he did say he would destroy ISIS so maybe the troops being sent to Syria and Yemen are all part of that plan however I had hoped there would be a new day when dealing with Russia. With all the blather about him being a Russian sympathizer/puppet the neocons might be forcing him to show he is tough on the big bear ? Either way it sucks IMO... S&F for the article

“Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine,” Toner added.

Yep I think the thought of criminal Hillary winning blinded people to the dangers of a neocon Warhawk filled congress...

And whether he likes it or not, Trump will need them to succeed for the next 4 years.

Agreed on McCain, he is insane. Probably suffering some age related dementia as well as POW PTSD, not a good combination.

Trump never said in the election season he would lift Russia sanctions. He always said he will be tough on Russia. And he's keeping his campaign promise.

Well there goes any chance of the USA and Russia improving relations. Putin is not going to give up Crimea any time soon and I cant say that I blame him after all the western meddling in Ukraine.

Looks like the shake up for the rest of the world we hoped Trump might bring is a failure and that he is just a rude irrational bumbling buffoon after all.

My only hope: that its a negotiation and not a demand.

In government, you project power, have a team of assistants to help you carry your ego, and you never appear to give. In business, instead, you use tactics to try to get the end result more in your favor than not. Noting like government., as "demands" are more bids in a negotiation.

I hope this is what he's doing.

Trump obviously knows Crimea doesn't want to be with Ukraine and Russians won't give it back. That's why he probably said that. He really doesn't want to lift the sanctions and he got a good excuse. So smart that people can't read his moves.

The current American sanctions on Russia is minor. It's mostly personal related. There is no American economic sanction on Russia. All the big US corporations do business in Russia as usual.

America and Russia will continue to cooperate in Syria against jihadists.

On the sanction, I don't believe you.

On Russia saying they won't give up Crimea, I'm hardly surprised.
