A worrying new survey of over 112,000 US high school students reveals that 36% believe newspapers should get ‘government approval’ of stories before publishing.

Also asked whether the press have too much freedom, 32% said ‘too much’.

Do these people not live in the real world? The media in the US shelters the public enough as it is without giving the government more control over stories.

Is this a worrying trend or just another useless poll? Your thought’s please.

p.s. Can a mod fix the link for me please!!

This has to be propaganda? Why would anyone, especially an american, want government censorship of the press?

This can't be true.

54 views and only 1 comment, I’m disappointed.

This should set alarm bells ringing, particularly to those who believe the media is too controlled already.

Allthough I also feel that government control of the media is undesirable I can understand why some my feel this way. Allmost all of the western media are currently acting as a willing propaganda arm for the terrorists in Iraq. It would be nice if the government could fight back.

Don't worry about it, everybody's talking about it here, but you can have a thread on the main board too.

mwm, that's the most ridiculous statement I have read of yours on ATS yet. The western media spent three years legitimizing the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and validating, then conversly taking the role of apologists for the often completely bogus justifications offered by Bush Co. The western media still perpetuates the myth of the necessity of American imperialist foriegn policies, how the hell do you get that the western media is a propoganda arm for any entity other than the coporate sponsors of this perpetual concept war on a noun? Come on now, your a smart guy man, you know better than that rubbish surely.

Twitchy how often do you hear the western media use the words "quagmire" in reference to Iraq?
How often do you hear about car bombs, and convernsley how often do you hear about the progress of the reconstuction efforts?
The simple fact is in the course of two years the coalition as a whole has lost what, 1400 soldiers?
in 24 months?
58 a month out of 150,000?
or .00038percent? one third of one tenth of one percent.
Yet somehow we hear everyday that Iraq is a quagmire.
Before the recent election how much good news have we heard reported out of Iraq by western Media?
When I see the news reporting all the bad and allmost none of the good, I see propaganda.

Notice how the questions are paraphrased..

I wonder how the actual questions were worded. Of course, I could go out and do a survey and come back with completely opposite findings. It depends largely on who is polled and how, what methods are used in generating candidates, how questions are phrased.

On the other hand..

I wouldn't be shocked to find out the survey was an honest and accurate portrait of American stupidity. We deserve what we get. We have let our administration run away with our values, and now we have to pay the price for our failure. The youth are more ignorant every year, more malleable to corporate greed logorythms. heh..

I look forward to the future regardless, there is no doubt it will be interesting.

That is one of the worst things I've heard, I mean if the news was censored anymore it would be something like this:

"Today a train crashed, but no one died because angels working for the government saved them."

Okay so maybe not that bed, but its the point I'm getting at.
