www.apple.com...

The Power Mac G5 is the worlds fastest personal computer and the first with a 64-bit processor which means it breaks the 4 gigabyte barrier and can use up to 8 gigabytes of main memory.

The new G5 processor available at speeds up to dual 2GHz with a new ultrahigh-bandwidth system architecture featuring AGP 8X and PCI-X makes the Power Mac G5 a breakthrough in desktop processing power. And models start at just $1999.

Ok mac lovers, (all two of you geeks) stop gloating at the rest of us. Would this run normal 32 bit software, or does everything have to be rewritten?

The mac will really take off when you're able to use windows software on it with little disruption.

No, i dont think everything has to be rewritten as its only a hardware change.

It will run existing software.

However, new software optimized for the 64bit processor's features should smoke.

Some follow-up stories indicate the the G5 processor is not really as fast as Stevie Jobs made us believe in his keynote address... but it is a very fast new architecture.

But don't worry, soon enough PC's processors will be faster, giving you enough new reasons to look down your nose at Mac users... who know that processor speed is only one factor in the equation of which computer suits your needs best.

I can already run these on my Mac iBook:
Mac OSX
Unix (X11)
Windows 2000

Applications on my little iBook. I removed SoftPC because it took up a lot of hard drive space... but for a while, I could run three simultaneous OS's... Windows was the slow one... running on my iBook, it was about the same as a 500MHz P2.

According to estimates... these new Macs should run Windows 2000 (at the same time as OSX and/or X11) at about the same as a 1.7GHz Xenon.

Hehehe. I'm trying to convince the publisher that I need a new mac g5 to keep up the networking...lol and I mean the whole shibang, the dual 2 ghz, with 2, 23 inch monitors both running agi pro's and 8 gig of ram and 2 250 gig harddrives...after you add bluetooth and airport extreme, the price is over 13,000 dollars... In other words I'll probably have to stick with what I have.

I bought an AMD 2100+ less than a year ago and it's already obselete (of course it doesn't help that I have to run it 500 mhz under its default clock speed because AMD included an underpowered stock processor fan). I swear, Moore's law is a plague...

I've heard that Macs run much more efficiently than windows systems, the only problem is that I know nothing about Macs. I just hope that when I take my A+ certification next year that there aren't very many Mac based questions.

Yup... it makes Windows users feel much better to make those types of parodies.

It's odd how Windows users can hate Microsoft on one hand, and dispise Mac's (the only real consumer-level alternative) on the other. Like it's been conditioned into them.

Dude... Mac is Unix.

OSX is built on BSD.

The new OSX Panther has built-in X11 compliance... I've had X11 beta on my iBook under OSX Jaquar and can run Open Office really nice!

I#ve never used a Mac before for everyday applications, but since OSX is based off of BSD then it's gotta be good!!

speaking from a technical support point of view, I once had to sit on the Mac support line for a day (shortage of people) and I have to admit, I found the Mac users were much more capable of even moving around through the system than your average Win user. ohh ohh...they even asked the right questions too!! Dont frett Shadow, AMD has already released their 64 bit processor. I got a chance to see it at the Cebit here in Hannover, and I just have to say, wow!

Computing

06/24/2003, 20:49 [Warren's Consumer Electronics Daily]

Apple moved Mon. to take lead in race to faster PC processors, introducing new PowerPC G5 chip capable of using 64-bit technology to expand memory to 8 GB, while also running existing 32-bit applications natively at same time. Chip, which Apple jointly developed with IBM and is produced at latter's E. Fishkill, N.Y., plant, is at heart of new Power Mac G5 desktop ($2,999) that uses dual 2 GHz 64-bit PowerPC, has 160 GB serial ATA hard drive, ATI Technologies' Radeon 9600 Pro graphic card. Lower priced versions of desktop feature single 1.8 GHz ($2,399) and 1.6 GHz ($1,999) G5 processors, 512 and 256 MB memory and Nvidia's GeFore 5200 graphics chip. Power Mac G5 desktops ship in Aug. and will be Apple's strongest challenge yet to Intel, whose single processors currently top out at 3.2 GHz. Elsewhere at Apple's worldwide developers conference in San Francisco, company unveiled Mac OS X version 10.3 operating system ($129) that will ship by year-end. Panther OS is Apple's 4th release of Mac OS X in 4 years and includes new version of Finder feature that puts user's favorite folders, hard drive, network servers and removable media in one location that can be accessed with click of mouse. It also has new version of Apple's iChat instant messaging software that allows full-motion video over broadband connection. New is Expose software that enables users to instantly view all open windows. Apple also formally released Safari Internet browser software that has had 5 million downloads since beta version was introduced in Jan. Safari has built-in Google search software. It's available as free download and requires Mac OS 10.2 software.

Alienware said it was first PC manufacturer to offer new Klipsch GMX A-2.1 speakers with all Alienware systems. Four-piece Klipsch GMX A-2.1 includes 2 identical, magnetically shielded satellite speakers, subwoofer, control pod. Subwoofer has 75 w amplifier, powering entire system. Controller provides 2 stereo inputs, one with RCA jack connections and other with 1/8" minijack. Controller also has minijack headphone output, power button, master volume control.

You can easily fix that Shadow. You just need to get a better cooler. I never use the stock cooling that comes with CPU's .... they are the $hits. I always Buy a separate cooler. I use the Thermaltake Volcano 11 Cooler for my CPU although there are many good coolers out there.

Trust me... macs are easier to use than PC's.
