you are assuming that there were obvious signs that the man could pick up on in the short time before he was asked this question.. I am assuming that it wasn't that obvious and that it was just as likely that the couple were trump supporters.

I thought the question would be sign enough, especially if there was a slight edge in the tone, indicating a sense of moral authority. "With a very stern voice" was quoted earlier.
I'm also assuming that anyone who was part of the protest would be too proud of the fact to give an ambiguous answer to that question.

No apology to the passenger or flight attendants. He obviously agreed with what his wife was saying.

Not necessary. If your wife was prone to going off like that, you might just be so hen-pecked that you just stay all silent no matter what you might really be thinking. That sort could scare you into voting for Hillary even though your vote is confidential!
