Both Peter and Phil sang lead vocals In Genesis.

Both had and have successful solo careers.

So for those who like their music, who do you regard as the better vocalist? Just an unscientific survey.

For me it would be Gabriel.

Hands down Gabriel. Although Phil had some big shoes to fill, and the way I heard it was that he didn't want to be the lead singer, but after countless auditions the others begged him to do it. I might add Phil is a sensational drummer.

If you haven't seen this yet....

Gabriel is on another level and in the heart, Collins is a great musician that chose the pop road. So for me they both have a lot to offer, but each one in a particular area. Im all for Gabriel.a reply to: alldaylong

Absolutely Phil Collins...he sounds much better live and had many more hits than Peter Gabriel..

Although I do think Peter Gabriel captures the feel of the 80's a bit more..maybe because of his music videos being a bit more entertaining.

Gabriel... Especially with his psychedelic outfits he'd wear alien-amiema like in the early years.... He clearly had the better voice.

Though I've always liked Collins too... he was just the drummer stuck with singing when Peter left to go solo.... So vocal wise? Gabriel hands down.

I prefer Phil's voice myself. It's a little rough around the edges, which is why I prefer it.

Phil Collins all day all night everyday.

Songwriter, drummer, actor, pop star.

Was Peter Gabriel on Miami Vice?

He was up on Salisbury Hill sure but he he didn't feel it in the air tonight like Phil did.

I see I'm out numbered here but against all odds I'm still saying Phil Collins for the Win.

Your Peter Gabriel songs are being blocked in the Us

I love them both

Peter has the edge because of his voice. That's his gift, and he is using it.
Phil also has a beautiful voice, but drumming is his number one gift. I lone them both.

Im a steel worker, but singing is my gift. It fills my heart with joy.

My parents made me go to church as a kid. I hated church, but loved the singing. I think a lot of these guys were in the same boat. Then I took classes in chorus, mens ensamble, etc all through Jr high and high school. To this day I practice for several hours a day, and exercise my vocal chords to get the most bandwidth I can. I love it.
Im going to have to go with Peter on this one. It is his number one gift, while it is Phils second gift

Gonna have to go with neither. I'll take Peter Murphy. Peter Gabriel(thus why I clicked here) name always confuses me with Peter Murphy.

As far as Genesis goes i prefer Phil Collins. Even though i love the lamb lies down on broadway album. I was happy to see Peter Gabriel go solo and now i can enjoy both groups. Gabriel continues to have an amazing career.

I simply can't choose. It's apples and oranges. Gabriel was the defining sound of 70s Genesis, while Collins was the sound of 80s mainstream Genesis. Old Genesis was progressive, while new Genesis was pop. Same name, same members, but two completely different styles of music. They should have just changed the name, because it's like two different bands.

Both artists are phenomenal. When Collins took center stage, they were still a progressive band, and he did a pretty good job of filling some massive shoes. He's got some golden pipes, besides his mad drumming skills. But he was not Gabriel. I think he was the perfect fit for the pop version of Genesis. I can't imagine Gabriel in that role. So it's probably for the best that they reinvented themselves. Thankfully Peter Gabriel went on to make some great music of his own.

I do prefer the original Genesis to the mainstream overplayed version, by far. I am also a bigger fan of Peter Gabriel, but I recognize that Collins has an incredible voice too. I can't say one is a better vocalist than the other.
