I simply can't choose. It's apples and oranges. Gabriel was the defining sound of 70s Genesis, while Collins was the sound of 80s mainstream Genesis.
Old Genesis was progressive, while new Genesis was pop. Same name, same members, but two completely different styles of music. They should have just
changed the name, because it's like two different bands.
Both artists are phenomenal. When Collins took center stage, they were still a progressive band, and he did a pretty good job of filling some massive
shoes. He's got some golden pipes, besides his mad drumming skills. But he was not Gabriel. I think he was the perfect fit for the pop version of
Genesis. I can't imagine Gabriel in that role. So it's probably for the best that they reinvented themselves. Thankfully Peter Gabriel went on to make
some great music of his own.
I do prefer the original Genesis to the mainstream overplayed version, by far. I am also a bigger fan of Peter Gabriel, but I recognize that Collins
has an incredible voice too. I can't say one is a better vocalist than the other.
