Americans always taking a 'short cut' to get to the end goal.

It doesn't sound so 'charming' and well enunciated when you take out the 'u'. As to the 'ue'..... blame the French

PS.... I really don't get how you guys change the pronunciation of aluminium.... there's a few 'u's for you

Ahem...don't even get me started with..."Worcestershire"!!

Touche'

And how the heck did you guys ever conclude a car trunk should be called a "boot"???

"Bonnet" (for hood) I can kinda' get IF I stick my pinkie finger out while I pick up my grog and try to sound sophisticated saying "hat"!

Haha! I currently live in Worcestershire!

It might have something to do with a car being seen as a 'she' here in the UK. I'll see if I can find out.

PS.... here we go from wiki why we call it the 'boot' and not 'trunk'...

The usage of the word "trunk" comes from it being the word for a large travelling chest, as such trunks were often attached to the back of the vehicle before the development of integrated storage compartments in the 1930s; while the usage of the word "boot" comes from the word for a built-in compartment on a horse-drawn coach (originally used as a seat for the coachman and later for storage).

And I'm vindicated.... the bonet/hood is a female thing as I suspected

The British ‘bonnet’ of course comes from the dainty headwear – preferred by women – in the early days of automotive design. Choosing a mainly feminine article fits with the European notion that all objects have a gender, indeed the French ‘La voiture’ shows why British car lovers often refer to their beloved motors as ‘she’ and ‘her’.

Great link explaining the difference between US and Brit names for car parts

Of course it's correct!

We can even express it mathematically: FB = 2CB + XB, where B = your answer to the question, "have you been drinking tonight, Sir?" I didn't say 'Sir/Ma'am', because (1) females are statistically far less likely to drink and drive, and, if they are, they are 72%* less likely to claim they just had 'two beers'.

Where A = The numerical value, in percent probability, of getting the correct reply in response to the instruction ..."recite the alphabet backwards"...expressed as a finite number.

And √2 = A

** And I actually had a cop ask me this late one night when I slid through a red light backwards into a grocery store parking lot! LOL! (I hadn't been drinking) And the correct answer is..."You're HIGH! No one can do that!"

(His reply was that I was free to go, but slow down next time).

Edit - More correctly, my answer was..."Z...Y...X...You're HIGH! No one can do that!!"

HA!! There was a time where I practiced the reverse alphabet and could do it right sharply under almost any condition. Not that I PLANNED to drive intoxicated, because at the time there were buses everywhere and the BART subway system, but I thought it prudent to develop this...... skill. So I did. I think if asked, I would now query whether they wanted the reverse alphabet in standard or metric.
