One that really bugs me is "you fight fire with fire" and in nearly all situations this is nonsense(an example of it being correct is when they burn out ahead of a forest fire to remove the fuel and stop the fire.)

If you came running up to me and said "help, my kitchen is on fire" and I ran into your house and set fire to your living room curtains you would not I imagine be overly impressed with my "help".

Failure is an 'outcome', not really an 'option' (unless for the insane).

No one of sound mind would ever embark on doing something where they would choose to fail (i.e. choose failure as an option).

So yes, I agree, this is a dumb saying.

The all time favorite quote-fail for me is...

That expression is perfectly fine, and makes complete sense. There are lots of people who hate that phrase (my sister, like you, among them), but it is perfectly appropriate.

As I have explained to her, "It is what it is" is not a statement about what will happen, but rather what already has happened. It is akin to saying "no use crying over spilt milk".

You cannot change the past, only the future. "It is what it is", is merely an acknowledgement of the reality of the present. People may dislike the lexicon of the statement, but this doesn't make it any less valid.

It has nothing to do with future events.
