Explosion heard in Tioga County, New York

Around 4:45 pm there was a loud explosion heard around Owego, New York. The sound was heard in nearby towns up to about 100 miles away. There were reports of a yellow mushroom cloud (this is unconfirmed, reports were seen on Facebook). The fire department has no information as there was no fire following the explosion. The weird thing is that there was a similar incident around the same time heard in Georgia. Wondering if anyone else on the east coast has heard anything? Maybe a meteorite?

My boyfriend heard the noise, it sounded kind of like thunder. We are about 10 or 15 miles from owego.

Maybe someone is setting off some tannerite for new years.

Someone must have blown up the Georgia Guidestone's, and the sound ricocheted all the way to NY via the Ley Lines.

That's what a lot of people are speculating on the tioga county Facebook page. I have never heard of tannerite before but I guess with enough of it it could make a very loud explosion.

New Years + redneck engineering = big boom/fun and maybe a fatality


My pops used to add c4 to our fireworks when I was a kid/ being ex SF he could go to his old unit and get whatever he wanted.

This is 200 lbs of tannerite. Big Boom. And yes, it is completely legal.

After watching this video it would also explain the yellow cloud that people were claiming to see.

Heard they were doing very thorough security checks at Times Square tonight and have garbage trucks filled with sand around so vehicles can't drive into the crowds.

Yea it all depends on how much you use. People blow up cars and even barns/houses with that stuff on youtube.

Somebody's stash of fireworks went up in smoke.

That's my bet.

People are often careless when handling the firecrackers.

Given that tonight is fireworks time, that's the best bet.

I guess I just missed it by a day...I picked up a load of lumber in Candor the day before.

Tried to edit, but I was past the time limit.

CORRECTION : That was only 50 lbs of Tannerite, so you can imagine what 200 would have looked like. 50 blew a very large hole in the ground and did some serious damage to that tree.

Latest update: they have found the site of the explosion and sent evidence to the FBI to investigate.

Wonder if it was just some folks having a good time or could it of been someone using that thought process to conduct a test with as little attention as possible.

Never know, we live in weird times where terrorism isn't just propaganda being spouted to us to stay fearful, it's almost now people pissed off at other groups and parties.
