Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories are no longer eligible to travel or be admitted to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP): Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in
Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen
on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country). Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria. These individuals will still be able to apply for a visa using the regular appointment process at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. For those who require a U.S. visa for urgent business, medical, or humanitarian travel to the United States, U.S. Embassies and Consulates stand ready to handle applications on an expedited basis.

Obama doesn't want to lose a rich source of votes for democrats which can be the only logical reason why something like this would be shutdown. The proof for this is everywhere Obama has affected similar things in regards to shielding sources of votes, and even encouraging illegal aliens to vote without fear of reprisal.

Scraping the seriously useless right wing blogs.
NSEERS was called “ineffective and discriminatory” by the ACLU and accurately so. The program didn’t yield any convictions for terrorism,
And dismantling this is a problem, why?
You know what it did do? It kept people from over-staying their visas. Essentially, it prevented illegal immigration.

I've quickly read the article and quickl skimmed through replies, maybe it's been mentioned before:
Why is Obama so heavily against this registry?
The obvious narrative is the "political corectness" one, yet we can all agree there's very little "politically correct" about droning people down. The current scapegoating of Russia (by Obama), aswell the maintaining of the now proven false narrative regarding Syria don't add to his list of recent political correctness.
Seems an odd thing to defend so vigorously.

Looks like Obama is attempting to send a clear and firm message to Trump about screening terrorists.
A system already in place after the 2001 attacks hasn't been used since 2011 is apparently going to be somehow dismantled.
The system named "the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System" is the subject.
Wonder why they stopped this in 2011?
President Obama Shuts Down Possibility of Trump’s Muslim Registry
As part of one of his final efforts in the White House, President Obama is shutting down one way that Donald Trump could make his Muslim registry a reality.
The Obama Administration is going to dismantle the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System — a program that, while unused since 2011, could have been used as the basis for Mr. Trump’s Muslim registry. While the program was largely a failure, it subjected immigrants from specified countries to monitoring — something that may be appealing to the Presidnet-elect.
