Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant was reportedly found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his home late Monday night, according to local officials.

Bryant's death is less than one week after reports surfaced that the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement was investigating him for allegedly cheating on his continuing education training, yourstephenvilletx.com reports.

This resonates as odd... at least to me. I know that suicide is quite in depth in regard to an individuals reason(s) for doing so.

However, and with ALL due respect and condolences to the friends and family members of this man, I just find it odd that he would end it all just because he cheated on various continuing education training. I realize he was in a position that should be held with the highest regard for honesty and integrity, but to take ones life for getting caught for cheating on a few tests just seems out of the ordinary.

Suicides, in general, typically occur when the individual feels all hope is lost.

I suppose he could have been forced to resign his position due to the cheating, and there is the probability that other things could have been going on in his personal life that the article doesn't mention.

Even still... something just doesn't feel right for me. I figured it was worth posting. Maybe others will be able to provide more to the story.

Maybe he uncovered some more of the liar, Chris Kyle's, lies and fabrications.
Seriously though, snipers are cowardly murderers. Killing people, who are no immediate threat to them, from 100s of yards away.
How did Chris Kyle become a "hero" anyway? Was it because he was a coward, because he was a liar or, because he was a murderer?

Disingenuous. What was he being 'educated' for, again?

Lived there many years. Been pulled over by Sheriff Bryant when he was a city cop. Was always fair and courteous. He has been Sheriff a long time there. I was shocked when I saw this news earlier. I also doubted suicide but just don't know. One of my first thoughts was retaliation for making the wrong arrest but I just don't know. RIP Sheriff.

You cheat on continuing education requirements, you WILL lose your Peace Officer license and you will likely never work as a peace officer in any capacity ever again.

You know absolutely nothing about snipers if you think they are cowards...lol...

They go WAY behind enemy lines with NO support, often having to go up against 100's of enemy taking some of the greatest skill of stealth and riflery to get to enemies that would only otherwise be reachable with armaments that are likely to have mass casualties beyond the target.

They are heroes of the highest order and skill sets... Get out of here with that coward bull#...

He's been the sheriff for twenty years, though. Think he knows the ropes?

TCOLE Requirements
Continuing Education Deadlines for all Peace Officer Licensees
Commission Rule 217.11 Legislatively Required Continuing Education for Licensees requires that individuals appointed as peace officers shall complete at least 40 hours of continuing education training and must complete a training and education program that covers recent changes to the laws of this state and of the United States pertaining to peace officers every 24-month unit of a training cycle. Included within the 40-hour requirement are other legislative required topics. These requirements are listed below for your information. All peace officers must meet these requirements or their peace officer licenses will become inactive Aug. 31, 2017. A peace officer first licensed on or after January 1, 2011, must complete a basic training program on the trafficking of persons within one year of licensure.

I wonder what the specifics were that prompted an investigation. He was elected, the people like him, obviously.

He didn't just snipe, he also assisted on the ground.

And its war, he was courageous and served his country.

What's cowardly is using Internet anonymity to speak ill of people who are no longer with us, heros at that.

I find it odd to off yourself because your spouse or significant other cheated on you.

Yet people do it.

Not understanding the reasons why somebody offed themselves is a pretty poor basis for questioning it. Call it suspicious because of the Kyle murder investigation, fine. But don't use 'it seems like a crappy reason' as your basis. That's a pretty crappy thing to do.

People who complain about 'he didn't fight fair!' are generally people who've never been in any kind of fight in their life.

No we are not cowardly murderers. We are the Guardian angels that protect the rest of the unfortunate ones who have to follow orders as well. The sons and daughters that have to go to horrible places and see horrible things and live with the nightmares the rest of their lives.. Until you've served in any active capacity, you'd do well to bite your tongue.

No one's protecting anything. The US mainland hasn't been attacked since the revolution. Constitutionally all wars we've been involved in are illegal.
So yea, there's that.
And Chris was proven to be a liar so pretty much all he said is to be questioned.

Kyle regularly did door to door clears with the Marines because he felt they didn't get enough training to give them the highest chances of survival. Getting too and from his sniper positions, and defending it as needed, was often more dangerous than anything a ground combat soldier would ever see. That information does not come from Kyle, it comes from his counterparts.

For you to call a military, special forces sniper a coward is probably one of the most ridiculous things spoken on these forums.

I worked with him briefly. He was a good man to everyone he covered, ask them- grunts don't forget who's good in the scope. As for his lying i wouldn't know. But I do know he.didnt slack on duty.

When you start having to add caveats to things to bolster your argument, you've already begun losing.

No, the mainland hasn't been attacked. Pearl Harbor was attacked, and it was US territory when attacked. Whether it's mainland or not is immaterial.

Constitutionally, war is legal when Congress declares it to be legal. Whether your personal opinion agrees with that or not is, again, immaterial.

The US "mainland" was attacked during the War of 1812.

If you're going to try and pontificate about things, you could at least have some semblance of a clue as to what you're talking about.

So yea, there's that.

Without knowing specifics continuing education for law enforcement is required in order to maintain your certifications. Secondly in most states a Sheriff is required to be a certified law enforcement officer. If you dont have / maintain the certification you cant hold the job. It also could mean that any arrests he has made since his training lapsed are invalid. He would have been looking at some serious charges / consequences.

Again without knowing specifics its just speculation on my part. Texas law enforcement requirements are about the same in my state and our training / on going education are accepted by either state.
