IMF chief Lagarde has left France before trial verdict: lawyer

International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has left France for Washington and will not be present for the verdict in her negligence trial, her lawyer told Reuters.

PARIS — Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, was found guilty on Monday of criminal charges linked to the misuse of public funds during her time as France’s finance minister, a verdict that could force her out of her post.

Apparently this all stems from a payout she made to some businessman in the amount of $400 million.

Its my understanding that she took this action under arbitration outside of court against the advice of her advisors.

But other than that, I dont know the background of the story.

Obvious question, why is the IMF paying out $400 million to a businessman...

Did you read the actual information that you posted? This was when she was finance minister in the French government, prior to joining the IMF. She didn't even pay the money out, she referred the case it was in regards to to arbitration. The actual arbitration panel awarded the amount, not her, she then approved it based on their findings.

If anything, if you read the detail you could very easily surmise she is being used more as a scapegoat.

The Intention of her crime if i were to take her word is that, she did not know, and she taught the acted with good faith. She is smart woman, she knew what she did.

So she has been found guilty in absentia, but the judge isn't going to fine, jail or otherwise sentence her. Must be nice.
