In a raid of the Hammond Police dept and local Sheriff's office, the FBI took cell phones, computers and vehicles. A source says that 2 law enforcement officers were arrested in October. It is unclear if these are related. They came ready, plenty of agents.

The FBI has raided the Hammond Police Department and the local Sheriff's Office.

The reason for the raid is unclear, but sources tell WDSU that FBI agents were at both locations. WDSU reached out to Hammond Mayor Pete Panepinto. He declined to comment.

Agents with the FBI were walking in and out of the building, stopping vehicles coming into the area. Sources close to the matter tell WDSU that agent seized cell phones, vehicles and computers.

It is a court authorized actions. I think that means they are looking for evidence in an existing case.

Anyone who was in the building at the time agents arrived were required to sign a crime scene log to leave. It was also payday for employees and many had to sign the log as well before leaving.

A spokesperson with the FBI said the bureau is "conducting court authorized actions" at the Police Department and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.

My local news says its related to earlier scandals of the drug task force selling drugs and stealing money.

They're looking for evidence in regards to a DEA task force that's under investigation for corruption.

ETA - silly is correct ^^

I grad from the University there. Corrupt little town, serious nepotism. Not the first time the Feds showed up. Last time I recall it was a meth lab being protected by some dirty cops. More than half the city workers were related. University was ok though. Decent school for the price.

In my town the corruption is so bad we have 3 police departments. One is actually working. And the other 2 are retired receiving huge pensions after only 20 years of service. Wow, what a great deal.

Very scary when the family tree is also the local municipality tree. Bad things happen in regular old hiring practices in cities. Throw in the family good old boys hiring plan, ugly.

That town is a major vein for drug transportation with 1-55. Once they found a U haul storage space loaded with drugs. During the late 90's the Univ there had the highest aids rate in the country. Knew a couple of people that died there of aids.

Now there's something you don't see every day. I have to wonder what exactly is going on that two LE agencies get raided. It can't just be one or two bad apples. They would never raid an entire department over something like that.

Crazy.

That hadn't crossed my mind. That makes sense. Seems like a ton of man power for the 2 arrested in October. Must be some major stuff.

Willing to bet they were seizing drugs and selling them. I do recall it was never a problem getting any type of drug one wanted when I lived there. And banks, so many banks in that little town. Sure that drug money had something to do with that volume of banks.

The two arrested a couple months ago are just from one agency. The investigation is also looking in to DEA agents and other local LE personnel. The two that were already arrested were just the first ones in what I suspect will be several more.

ETA - this article goes in to a bit more detail about how wide the investigation is, and how far back it's going. Multiple cases, multiple defendants, several years worth of cases, etc, are all being looked in to.

Interesting isn't it. One part of the gov (CIA) is involved in distributing drugs, another part involved in investigating and arresting. Keeps everyone in business and relevant.

Think that's bad? I live in a town of less than 3,000, we have 6 cops and the most senior officer [ been here about 12 years ] makes $100,000 a year. No kidding. They have to post the salaries of public employees and they all make between 68 and 100 grand a year. Plus, the city matches their retirement plan. And GREAT insurance.
All in a very small town. IN ILLINOIS.
