I'm looking to make a video game, but am not quite proficient in graphic design, so I'm wondering if anyone knows some great websites for things like icons, images, backgrounds, and the like. Cartoonish may be preferred for some of the game ideas I have, but I'd look into anything that I could legally use in my game that would fit well. A simple google search doesn't usually bring up video-game type images.

This is one of the best...there are others. Good Luck!

PS They do however have a visable watermark across, on top of, under or through about 30% of all their pics. Not all...and I use them all the time.....
ie: my Avater/Profile pics

More times than not the image that is considered 'free' is only for personal use, if you ever plan on making any money with it you are not supposed to use them. That would be copyright infringement.
A lot of times IF you ask an artist or a photographer if you can use it in something (like a video game) they 'may' let you use it, just be honest and up front about it all. A professional photographer or artist will more than likely not allow that though, so be prepared for a, "No".
A lot of people that are really good at their craft aren't professionals but have the ability, and, the best part is that they may find it a fun and interesting thing to see it in a game, etc.

I used to go to www.sxc.hu..., but I'm uncertain that it's even really a site anymore. I actually uploaded a few images to them probably 8 years ago.

Hopefully the site still exists (can't access it on the network that I'm on right now) and that the stuff is still free. If not--sorry I got your hopes up.

ETA: Like previously noted, you need to ensure that it is royalty-free for whatever application you're going to use. I think that you can search for absolutely royalty-free images, though, so it should be easy.
