Some of you may know that Mechwarrior 5 was going to launch years back, there were awesome trailers there had jaws on the floor. That vision never came to fruition and what we ended up with was some sort of F2P Death-Match, which in all honesty was god awful and has grown into something much better in the following years but still lacked the Mechwarrior experience that came from the previous titles.

They are going to put a management system in the game reminiscent of MW1, and that the game will be a sandbox-esque game which I think would be sweet, an endless battle across the innersphere. Also the story will lead up to right before the clan invasion, so no powerful Omni-tech mechs.

Heres hoping it comes out and delivers, and doesn't have some stupid micro-transaction BS.

A new singleplayer-only MechWarrior is coming in 2018. That's a long ways off, but I sat down with Piranha Games president Russ Bullock to talk about their plans for bringing MechWarrior back to its roots and what shape that will take. Bullock is quick to stress that, outside from the live demo that prefaced the announcement, MechWarrior 5 is still very early in development and that many of its features are still being pieced together. "One thing we've learned over is just to be cautious with expectations with our playerbase," he says. "We want to make sure we're really certain about things before they go out."

I've been wanting to play a Mech game for some time now so tell me, should I be excited? Because I want to be excited!

What are some good Mech games now? Mech Warrior 4?

I think you should be, I am. I really was waiting for 5 after finishing 4 and when it got cancelled I was bummed out hard, then years later Mechwarrior online came out but it was meh, like I said though its improved and might be worth checking out, it certainly is pretty.

mwomercs.com...

Mechwarrior 4 was good too, it's just a little old graphics aren't the best.

Otherwise theres games like Hawken and Titanfall 1/2 but they aren't the same caliber as a Mechwarrior game imo.

I played some MWO today after not playing for months got all nostalgic played some faction warfare then ended up googling Mechwarrior 5 for some reason and found the article :p

Hawken vs Mechwarrior

I'm Really stoked for this! By the way, is that the voice of Captain Price running base command, or do mine ears deceive me?!?

I've been playing MechWarrior: Online since closed beta, and, though I really do enjoy it and think its a great game (despite what the nay-sayers on their forums say), I have been ITCHING for some single-player Mech action for years now.

I remember my first foray into the Battletech universe was MW2: Mercs. By the sounds of this though, It looks like they're going to really bring back that nostalgia in a good way.

As for the micro-transaction stuff, I watched the live-stream of Mech-Con where they announced it, and it sounds like it won't have any of that. It'll be like old times - you buy the game, it's yours, no "spend US$15 and get this mech" nonsense.

I think though that they MIGHT do expansions, seeing as, according to the interview, their projected timeline only runs up to JUST before the "Invasion of the Killer Clams" (intentional spelling error there). That's alright by me, as I'm an Inner-Sphere Loyalist (Filthy Clanners can go and suck vacuum!), but it would be cool to see a classic-styled add-on that adds more missions and extends the timeline into the Clan invasion in the future.

What also excites me is (and I quote from the article), "With the countless planets of the Inner Sphere to fight on, MechWarrior 5 will use "seeded" levels which will generate terrain dynamically based on a variety of factors."

That sounds like there could hopefully be procedurally-generated maps and missions, similar to what's being planned for the turn-based Battletech Game that Harebrained Schemes is developing. If that's the case, then you could conceivably run through ENDLESS contracts and missions without getting bored. I really DO hope that is the the case.

In any case though, I know for myself at least, it's all aboard the hype-train, bound for a bright end to the tunnel of non-singleplayer-mechwarrior despair!

By the by, Lysergic, do YOU play Mechwarrior: Online?

Cheers!

Then go download the MWO client. Has a decent intro to get you use to mech control but you can skip the rest of the tutorial if you want and get right into combat, and customization is what you gotta do, really there are builds to look up for different mechs depending what youre trying to do and what items you got atm.

metamechs.com...

Not sure what the current free mechs are but I ended up buying and Arctic Cheetah and a Stormcrow with C-Bills. First 25 matches I think give you a really decent bonus in C-bills save that up to buy first mech, but experiment with the trial mechs they usually have decent load outs. I've not spent any real cash on mechs I just grind out the C-Bills :p (yet)

And yeah, I'm #ing stoked about 2018.

IF they do it right its going to be freaking massive, I'd buy every damn expansion. I think the technology is now here to make excellent sandbox universes to play. Finally! That with VR, I can only imagine the the nerdgasm potential.

I like loosing pilots and mechs and equipment but also destroying mechs, killing enemy pilots, and salvaging equipment, I am really looking forward to the in depth management system that I feel will just add to the immersion of the game.

Yeah I play MWO occasionally seems I hadn't played in so long I got kicked out of my Smoke Jaguar clan :p

And really if it had limited multiplayer like a CO OP option I think I might die like one of those super Asian gamers that does 100 hrs straight, no bio break.

WELL gents, if you ever are online, feel free to add me in the friends list, name Grotoiler. would be fun to run with some of the people from ATS in some mech-on-mech action!

Lysergic, I'm also really looking forward to the economics side - starting off as a lowly gun-for-hire and working your way up to commanding one's own merc unit. I loved doing that back in the day on MW2 Mercs.

Also, as you say, a Co-Op would be FANTASTIC... even if it's a simple local-based LAN setup, getting a few mates to run together as a lance and jam would be the best!

Yeah, Battlezone was awesome...

By the by, have you seen the remastered Battlezone 1 that Rebellion Interactive released earlier this year? Same engine, same game, same cold-war-in-space plot, but updated AI and Graphics. They've also redone The Red Odyssey, THe Black Dogs vs. Chinese expansion for it.

Ah, the nostalgia flows strong in me right now!
