Web giants YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft will step up efforts to remove extremist content from their websites by creating a common database.
...
Each company will decide what image and video hashes to add to the database and matching content will not be automatically removed, they said.

The database will be up and running in early 2017 and more companies could be brought into the partnership.

Web giants to cooperate on removal of extremist content

Censorship is coming. Now this article mentions terrorism being its target of content to be removed.

Tech companies have long resisted outside intervention in how their sites should be policed, but have come under increasing pressure from Western governments to do more to remove extremist content following a wave of militant attacks.

I don't see it stopping there. I've personally seen one of my favorite youtubers account messed with. No response yet from Youtube on why. (Bearing)

Oddly, these are private companies and to their own discretions, can terminate content based on "extreme" views. I don't like that...you shouldn't either. Trump highlighted just this facet in his early campaign speeches. Turns out, it was in the works anyway.

*ETA* Terminated Youtuber info, caution:language.

take away the voice of the mentalists whom otherwise would have no global platform to spread their propaganda... oh the humanity.

dont worry, ATS will always be a safe haven for the thinly veiled hate speech or nationalism and the like....
i suppose there will be another influx of new users, just like the reddit crackdown sent a flood of those looking for a new platform to let the world know how they feel or can solve every social-eco-political fracas.

So you agree with clamping down on free speech?

I think discussion and debate go further to combat ignorance than trying to silence them.

It's not just about terrorism, and it's not really voluntary- at least it won't stay that way:

EU to tech industry: Remove hate speech faster or we'll make you....Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft aren't delivering on promises to pull harmful messages within 24 hours.

Facebook has built tool to censor posts in China, report says

If anyone thinks this wont happen here, you are delusional.

Eventually ISPs will be targeted.

And there already appears to be widespread acceptance of limiting the choice of speech we use in this country at the city level by actual law:

You can be fined $250,000 for not calling people ‘ze’ or ‘hir,’ pronouns if they demand

Good luck, people. We are going to need it.

Social and political compliance through compulsion is the new Western value, joining the long line of fascists, collectivists and despots our country was founded against.

It was a nice ride, while it lasted.

I find the possibility of censorship to be kind of scary. Right now it may just be the largest of the social media giants, but that can change as more platforms enter the agreement. I cant help but think of the way so few people trust the traditional news media any more. how will this change the way people trust the social media giants?

I feel like youre being extremely short sighted here...........

They always target others before coming around to everyone........Much like Germany Circa 1940s........

One thing is certain. They didn't care enough about all of the other conspiracy theories that came before they were outed as pedos. Not enough to scrub any mention of it and legislate and pass laws to punish people for talking about it. They didn't scramble to erase any other story. But this one hurt them.

Indeed, it has been a nice ride. When doing some research on censoring, it goes back as far as the internet.

Here's a good question. What next? What will be the next outlet for dissenting opinions and views? Will it exist on the same infrastructure or will we humans come up with something new?

When met head on with opposition, evolution finds a way forward. In this case, the flow of information.

I think another information revolution will take shape as time goes on. All things being equal, the pendulum will swing.

There are already 20 global media partners who have signed up this year.

They are going to try and control what you can read!

The train is leaving the station, while much of America sleeps.

This could be the beginning of the end of those giants, just like the beginning of sites like ATS was the beginning of the end of the mainstream media. If people feel like they are not getting the whole internet from these giants, they will most certainly look first to where they are getting the whole internet. People went to Alex Jones to see what he was about for example even if they did think he was a raving nutcase. Banning content, fortunately, seems to backfire for the censors.

I do believe Twitter is one of the first ones to suffer as a result of the censorship, with a migration to other trending media sites that specifically are opposed to censorship.

Google sided with the pedophiles on the Pizzagate issue, and now perhaps a million people look at Google as an organization of evil.

Good point! People got tired of being trashed and ignored by the Obama Admin and do-nothing Congress. Trump was hired as our revolutionist to push the pendulum the other way.

With the constant threat of ISP censoring as seen in Europe there exists the chance for it to come to the US as well. With Microsoft also onboard that would encompass a very large portion of internet users.

Linus/Unix and satellite internet might just be the way forward, no?

Exactly.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

Link.

So if people don't think any of this applies to them and what they say, it will be too late by the time it does.

Thank you.

Yes I did. And I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

But I don't recognize this country anymore.

We have a President that wants to regulate speech.

We have a President-elect who wants to regulate speech.

We have private enterprise that wants to regulate speech.

And, we have a populous that wants to regulate speech.

This issue is doomed.

I believe this goes back much further. 9/11 for instance.

Yeah, because it's going to end at the targeted dissenters. If one supports this they knowingly or unknowingly support themselves and everyone else being censored.
