The American al-Qa'eda operative unmasked last week as having planned to bring down the Brooklyn Bridge was first detained in March, and has been used by the FBI for months as a double agent, it was reported yesterday.

US authorities waited until last week to announce a plea bargain struck with Iyman Faris, a Pakistani-born lorry driver ordered to scout out terror targets, including the New York landmark.

This is not funny, is serious, don�t u think is really dirty to do that? i mean then the people really thinks that the guy responsable for attacks, is in jail, what an illusion from the goverment...

This actually is a very interesting story as so much can be infered from it.

Why was he arrested recently??

Well either he was of no more use or more use arrested.

a)His contacts have been arrested and/or their plans foiled.

b)His contacts have become suspicious and abandoned him and by announcing that he had been turned might flush them out.
c)A lack of communication between different law enforcement agencies.

d)He never really had any contact and he is just a solo nutter.

Each alternative would be interesting for different reasons.

This man was held by the FBI in a "safehouse" in VA. He was held in the hopes of getting more people in the US associated, as well as farther abroad. While here he was under constant supervision while staying in touch with his other handlers.

Not really sure whether CA is trying to infer that he was sponsored by the US or what. He was basically caught, there was no publicity on his capture for obvious reasons. From what I have read in numerous publications he was instrumental in some of the recent arrests and general "foiling" of plots. One of the latest embassy closing was based on info attained through him. I have also read speculation on the latest Tanker full of explosives in greek waters having something to do with his info. I will try to find links again.

Delaware county is one county over from me. This guy is connected and his neighbors really had no clue when interviewed on local media. They all stated things like, "he was quiet", and,"I never heard him say anything against america"...yeesh. The Muslim pop. here is fearful even more now of reprisals. I don't believe there have been any though.
