Yes, German and ethnic nationalism has threatened the world, but it did so in the same way and for the same reasons as Soviet internationalism. They were both single-party, totalitarian states where opposition and criticism was supressed. What I mean by nationalism is the nation state—its territory, its people, its laws—as the binding principle for political unity.

The nation-state has proven to be the most fertile ground for democracy and secularism. As race, religion and class dissolves, the territory and its borders is a rational, and already proven choice, for social aspirations.

Patriotism is a virtue, not a philosophy.

The entire speech was a thing of beauty and worth a listen. But his nationalist philosophy in particular was rational, elegant, and inclusive to all Americans.

I am always a sucker for nationalistic talk. the waving of the flag with hope is always good.

But its also the most empty stuff to discuss. nationalism will always get cheers, but it doesn't hold any actual weight.

It is a way to hold hands as we go down the open road, instead of being kicked down the sewer of globalism.

Why is globalism a sewer?
Have you ever been outside of the continent?

Go look at Mexico City, come back and paint a rosy picture for us.

Go look at Kyoto, come back and paint a tale of woes for us.

Go look at freaking Mississippi and paint a nice picture, go to Brussles and paint a bad picture, etc.

Yes, poor places are poor, rich places are rich. I was wondering why globalization is a sewer. Isnt it the absolute inevitable outcome of a advanced society? Isn't the actual argument not if we should become a global society to simply a how should we become?

Or are you one of those successionists who doesn't even like a united states, much less a united world?

Ahh, I see. whereas Trumps nationalism isn't that
even though he is right wing, with a right wing house, and congress, and a promise to stack the scotus to right wing philosophies.

where opposition and criticism was supressed.

Like liberalism and leftist news outlets being threatened to be shut down

Patriotism is a virtue, not a philosophy.

And nationalism is a drug, that can lead to a sickness.

I am not trying to come off too panicky, but it is pretty much a power consolidation under a single viewpoint that is promoting the nationalistic discussions now that they have unchallenged power. That can be a bit concerning.

I will still remain cautiously optimistic though..because we have the freedom of the internet to discuss things, a seemingly open and fair election process, and unless those things change, then any rebellion will come in the form of simply voting if things go sideways.
If however there is suddenly clamping down of things like the internet and political discourse...I would assume even the right wing would help fight against that..even if it is benefitting their party (His cyber "security" stuff has me very skeptical that he is hinting at)

If President Obama were a football coach he would send all the water to their competitors side in hopes they would like us and take it easy on us in the 4th quarter while lecturing his own team on how unfair it is to drink water when the other team forgot to bring their own.

Sticking it to Soros?

Don't be so sure about that. Soros is a ring master in the political circus, in which many revolve around including Trump.
Too many are being sucked into the whole trump as a savior syndrome under false pretenses of an "anti establishment" position. Look no further than Soros. Look no further than his cabinet, seems that most don't agree with it as an issue no what they are shared about that. Here's what shared elsewhere in a similar topic(using both sides of the same coin sources):

A conservative news story on it;

The funder of all things unholy also funded the Trump Tower in Chicago.

According to the Chicago Tribune: Donald Trump has lined up three New York hedge funds, including money from billionaire George Soros, to invest $160 million in his Chicago skyscraper, a key piece in perhaps the largest construction financing in the city's history, according to real estate sources and public documents.

-Chicago Tribune

Soros gave Donald Trump a mezzanine loan, which is basically a bailout, because Trump didn’t want to, or couldn’t, front his own money to build the Chicago Trump Tower. Mezzanine loans are loans offered with outrageous interest that help the developer on the front end of finance, and which often offer a stake in the building.

Trump was also named in a lawsuit along with Soros in New York surrounding the sale of the GM Building, so it’s not as if Trump only dealt with Soros in Chicago.

Many Trump supporters might think this is no big deal—that businessmen have to do business with people they may personally not like. However, in 2011, when considering a White House bid, Trump attended a Tea Party rally and told people to, “Leave George Soros alone, he has enough problems,” giving the distinct impression that Trump might just owe the global manipulator money. The magnitude of the George Soros identity is not known universally.

Patriotism is a virtue, not a philosophy.

“Patriotism is fierce as a fever, pitiless as the grave, blind as a stone and as irrational as a headless hen.”
~ Ambrose Bierce

“Patriotism is a religion, the egg from which wars are hatched.”
~ Guy de Maupassant

“Patriotism is a menace to liberty.”
~ Emma Goldman

“Patriotism is a pernicious, psychopathic form of idiocy.”
~ George Bernard Shaw

“Patriotism is a superstition, one far more injurious, brutal and inhumane than religion.”
~ Gustave Herve

“Patriotism - the virtue of the vicious.”
~ Oscar Wilde

“Patriotism is a survival from barbarous times which must not only be evoked and educated but which must be eradicated by all means - by preaching, persuasion, contempt and ridicule.”
~ Leo Tolstoy

“You’ll never have a quiet world until you knock the patriotism out of the human race.”
~ George Bernard Shaw

“A patriot sets himself apart in his own country under his own flag, sneers at other nations and keeps an army of uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people’s countries and keep them from grabbing slices of his. In the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for ‘the universal brotherhood of man’ - with his mouth.”
~ Mark Twain, The Lowest Animal

“This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism on command, senseless violence and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism.”
~ Albert Einstein

“Patriotism means advocating plunder in the interests of the privileged class of your particular country. The time will soon come when calling someone a patriot will be the deepest insult.”
~ Ernest. B. Bax

“Politically speaking, tribal nationalism [patriotism] always insists that its own people are surrounded by ‘a world of enemies’ - ‘one against all’ - and that a fundamental difference exists between this people and all others. It claims its people to be unique, individual, incompatible with all others, and denies theoretically the very possibility of a common mankind long before it is used to destroy the humanity of man.”
~ Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, p.227

“Seas of blood have been shed for the sake of patriotism. One would expect the harm and irrationality of patriotism to be self-evident to everyone. But the surprising fact is that cultured and learned people not only do not notice the harm and stupidity of patriotism, they resist every unveiling of it with the greatest obstinacy and passion (with no rational grounds), and continue to praise it as beneficent and elevating.”
~ Leo Tolstoy

“Blind patriotism has been kept intact by rewriting history to provide people with moral consolation and a psychological basis for denial.”
~ William H. Boyer

“Patriotism is a superstition artificially created and maintained through a web of lies and falsehoods, robbing us of our dignity and increasing our arrogance and conceit.”
~ Emma Goldman

“In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated, and scorned. When his cause succeeds however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.”
~ Mark Twain

“If the test of patriotism comes only by reflexively falling into lockstep behind the leader whenever the flag is waved, then what we have is a formula for dictatorship, not democracy... But the American way is to criticize and debate openly, not to accept unthinkingly the doings of government officials of this or any other country.”
~ Michael Parenti

“During times of war, hatred becomes quite respectable even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism.”
~ Howard Thurman

“Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism— how passionately I hate them!”
~ Stephen Decatur

“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.”
~ William Shakespeare

"Men in authority will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism, and find criticism subversive"
~ Henry Steele Commager - (1902-1998) Historian and author

"We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world."
~ Lord Baden-Powell

"Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong."
~ James Bryce

"More often than not, those leaders who rally the people to kill other people in the name of patriotism and nationalism are usually themselves murders, liars and thieves who through their power cause millions of others to "kill, steal and destroy." Satan is well served by these devious tyrants. "
~ Gary Amirault

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

I'm not even American.

Try again.

EDIT TO ADD: One must ask why you seem so enthusiastic about "pounding others into the ground with a hammer". Are you an avid supporter of oppression? Or would you like to revise what you said?

I commend for for that Brilliant Logic . Those who attack Nationalism while using Nazi Germany as an Example of it's Dangers , in Reality know Nothing of the Greatness a Nation State can Aspire to be if Governed by Just Laws and Just Men .
