We are thankful for a new day in the Smokies. The wildfires are out, and Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge were spared. While surrounding neighborhoods suffered significant damage, our prayers were answered, and the rain has extinguished the fires. Fires consumed about 15,000 acres locally, accounting for about 4% of our total land area.
Our mountains will quickly recover, but many of our area’s residents lost their homes and livelihoods. We have many guests asking how they can help. We need your support more than ever. Show the Smokies how much you care this fall. Make a donation to help our residents in need and get 50% OFF our nightly rates excluding holidays.
Pigeon Forge is currently open for business and Gatlinburg hopes to be accessible and operational by the end of this week. Our area needs your support! Our mountains are still beautiful!
Some Suggested Local Charities where contributions are needed:
Pathways Church Sevierville - 100% of money goes directly to displaced families. Choose "give without setting up an account" then choose "Sevierville Campus" and a special fund for the fire relief will appear. Church has connections with principals of schools whose students have lost their homes.
Sevier County Food Ministries
Pets Without Parents - Caring for displaced pets until owners can bring them home.
Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministry

I have used this company for many many years and they are wonderful. What better way to show your support. They are begging for reservations. You don't have to use the company that I listed but please show your support. If you live close to there stop by for lunch or dinner. Visit a local store and buy some merchandise. Too far away, thank goodness for the internet. Many of these stores have websites. Please contribute to the local economy and help them to rebuild this beautiful area!!!!

It's not that nobody cares. It's just that our hoses don't reach that far. Where was the South when California burned? How about Eastern Washington last year? Oh, you didn't hear about that, right?

Fair enough.
I was driving a semi OTR at the time. I knew New Orleans and Biloxi both. Biloxi was a thriving metropolis built on a middle class; New Orleans was a ghetto masquerading as a city with no middle class. The French Quarter and tourist spots were shining little orbs of extravagance owned and operated by wealthy folk surrounded by miles upon miles of pure poverty. Any middle-class structure needed to keep tourism alive was imported from suburbs far removed from New Orleans.
And we see which was stronger. Biloxi is back bigger and better than before. New Orleans is still trying to rebuild.
Successful, strong people are not what the media wants to portray. They want to show helplessness and despair, not hope and self-reliance. The latter empowers only people, but the former empowers big government, oligarchy, and royalty.

I heard all about it while it was happening actually. There were fires all over the West Coast and their bordering states. This has been going on for 3 weeks and I just heard about it yesterday.
President Barack Obama has spoken with Tennessee's governor to offer support for residents gravely affected by recent wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains.
A statement from the White House says Obama asked Republican Gov. Bill Haslam for an update on the ongoing response to the wildfires, which destroyed hundreds of buildings and killed seven.
The White House says Obama expressed his condolences for the lives lost in the fire. He also offered his sympathies to those residents who may have lost their homes or business.
Obama also committed to providing the assistance necessary to combat this fire. The White House says FEMA approved a grant earlier this week to help mobilize the resources necessary for an effective response.
Crime skyrocketed up here in NW Louisiana when we were nice enough to take in New Orleans refugees.

I did see a vid o skynews yesterday which looked pretty bad. I'm in England, so we don't get wildfires, however what if this is arson? Someone or group started it? What if it's a group coming from Mexico who are angry about access to the USA or angry about 'Trump' even? What if it's some type of terror attack? Meant to clear or kill people off from the area?
If it is just the heat causing it, then i hope the rain comes... well, for whatever reason, I hope the rains come.

From MY personal experiences... south being so racist there's VERY LOW hate crimes and hardly any big crimes at all. No lives lost to cry baby loss..or football game. Yet in north and in west it's white people crimes. Getting mugged for color, or wearing a color. I trust a black Tennessean before a new Yorker or so co black and they feel the same. You stop your racism, ours ended.

I agree with this statement 100%. I could not say it better. People here in TN actually care about their neighbors. We see character 1st around here. A whole lot less haters than the media would ever allow people to imagine 'cause it doesn't fit the narrative and MOST people know it.
I am thankful and sad about this. I have a friend who lost his home in this but not his life. I have family that were on the safe side of the Mtn ridge who were visiting other family who were in town for thanksgiving and just did make it out safe just before the flare up.

Something may be in the water there... oh yeah it is slightly radioactive water in the Tennessee river there. Down stream from Oak Ridge will do that for you.
