The story of Donald Trump’s grandfather is a classic American rags-to-riches tale.

After emigrating from the western Palatinate region of Germany in 1885 at the age of 16, Friedrich Trump took up a job as a barber in New York. A few years later he took his life's savings and opened up a restaurant in Seattle, Trump dynasty biographer Gwenda Blair has written for Politico.
By 1892, he had become a US citizen and was on his way to becoming a rich man by offering a combination of food and women to revellers in the western city’s red light district. This was followed by further projects selling night time pleasures to gold miners on the wild West Coast of the States.

Trump returned to Germany in 1901 at the age of 32, and already a wealthy man.

A fun history lesson coming out of Germany about Trump's grandpa who we learn ran restaurants and whore houses. Nothing scandalous here, just interesting to learn he became a US citizen, married a German woman who became home sick and wanted to move back to Germany. After living in Germany for some time he decided he wanted to be German citizen again but was refused by the gov't because he was accused of not giving notice and dodging mandatory military service. He was forced to leave the country and he went back the the US.

This all went down in the early 1900's so he definitely dodged the upcoming World War! Lucky guy and I'm sure he wasn't too upset about Germany giving him the boot!

Trump bragged about grabbing women by the crotch because he thinks he's a star and is now the president elect so do you really think an old story about his grandpa is the straw that's gonna break the camels back? Will some Trump supporter out there reading this all the sudden regret their vote?

Fun fact about me, I'm related to Henry's last wife, the one he didn't kill.

Another fun fact, Bloody Mary was Henry's daughter. Say her name in the bathroom mirror 3 times WITH the lights off. I dare ya!

What are you so insulted about ? His German heritage, his American-can-do wealth creation, advertising "Rooms for Ladies"....I don't see how there something in this 'offensive'. It's history, not an opinion piece.

However we all know when an American doesn't appreciate insult's toward Americans.

How is this "disgusting smut?" From what I read, it didn't sound like that at all. It sounded like his grandfather was the purveyor of an in-demand service. I don't think it was intended to offend puritanical sensibilities.

I'm also American, and dare I say get over it. It's not smut, and it's not smearing. The most interesting my own family history gets, if you discount the barely traceable Russians fleeing the turn of the century anti-Jewish pogroms, is the Irish branch were candlemakers. So Grandpa Trump ran whore houses, who cares, it's still a cool factoid. Why are you so uptight, you got family history tied to them in a way you're ashamed of or something?
