the ones still doing good music.

I'm a Tool head. So Tool is my obvious answer. It's been about 10 years since their last album, but they are releasing another one soon (in Tool time).

Acknowledging how loose 'rock' is as a genre, I would submit Rilo Kiley as a great band. Unfortunately they disbanded, but they still fall in your time window.

Or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. One of my favorite indie rock bands.

Red Sun Rising, Sixx AM (with Nikki Sixx) and Disturbed are going strong. I don't know much besides that. Avenged Sevenfold is really good still. Blink-182 released a new album, California, with a new lead singer.

My personal favorite, a heavy-touring, small-venue, successful (though not commercial and thus not wildly rich), independent band, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers

For a comparison, some would consider them a Jimmy Buffet or Bruce Springsteen of the Southwest, though I feel like that has more to do with the fans and culture of the band's fans.

They play a massive annual show / festival called Circus Mexicus in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, and even play a handful of shows in fans' backyards, referred to as the Backyard BBQ Tour. Between their website and YouTube, you can legally listen to all of their music online.

I HIGHLY recommend attending a show when they're in your neck of the woods. You'll become a Peacemaker for life.
