what is with all the gates?

Question:
Why have we labeled so many conspiracies , especially recently, gates.
We have Twittergate, Pizzagate, Inflategate, Emailgate, letsjustmakecrapupgate, just to name a few.

Why do we keep naming conspiracies gate?

Is adding gate to the end of a word like the official conspiracy tag?

Inquiring minds want to know

I mean open the gate and share the reasons with those of us who can't figure out how to open the gate.

Adding 'gate' is basically a way of signifying a scandal ; i.e. the 'thing' implicitly being as much if a scandal as the Watergate scandal. Today, though, it is mostly used hyperbolically.

Yes, "Watergate" was the original model.
Back in Reagan's time, there was a scandal involving dealings with Iran and the "Contras" in the Honduras. The media had trouble with this one, because "Irangate" and "Hondurasgate" were not easy to pronounce. They finally settled for "Contragate".

Yep, Watergate and the propensity for humans to compare. Gate is now the cliche to to to make something sound like we should pay attention to it.

I think the inundation of conspiracy-gates is for the purpose of muddying the waters. I'm referring to the -gates as a wall of conspiracies, because you can't see the truth on the other side.

As for the proposed wall to the south, it will have enough gates with better access to render the point moot. All we can hope for is better documentation along with the ease of access.
