I mean it would be BEYOND obvious who did it if this is true...unless one thing...if WL was working with Russians and Putin did it since the U.S. has turned up the rhetoric on Russia messing with the 2016 election. It could be Russians just to silence himor it could be Russians just to get the U.S. to back off.

The problem with this theory, that the Russians silenced him in order to get the US to back off, is the release of the information. I think it was well known the information was protected with a dead man's switch.

If the Russians did it, if Assange is even dead, it might indicate that WL wasn't releasing the info quickly enough for the Russians. For Assange it was an insurance policy, worthless after a complete release so he'd want to conserve the info, but the Russians might have felt like they benefitted from an immediate and complete release.
