The conflict in Syria is part of Washington's prime goal to impose global hegemony, President Bashar Assad told a Russian newspaper. Terrorists in Syria, he said, are being used by the US and its Gulf allies to assert control over the region, primarily to weaken Iran.

This is the theory Paul Craig Roberts has been propagating for years. Assad is the first world leader to mention it as I recall.

I have been a believer in the theory for some time. The following thread has a discussion of my view on it.

The simple reasons WW3 over Syria makes sense

The theory seems to be the most logical to me because it fits all the facts in my opinion.

Syria was never an important Arab state, although Assad and his dad before him were bastards. If the US wanted to start a global hegemony then the US would have started somewhere else.

It's nice and easy to blame the US for all the wrongs in the world, but Assad is to blame for Syria. Certainly Russia's mouthpiece RT.com interviewing Assad is hardly going to blame anyone his own brutality.

The US didn't start there, but it is one of the last pieces needed, if Russia would have stepped in before it even got to Syria we might not be in the situation we are in now.

I think it's a land grab for Israel when Syria is so fragmented it is no longer a country Israel will steal a large portion and boot out the occupants.

Bingo! Then it becomes a convenient military staging ground for our 51st state.
