President Barack Obama answered a 6-year-old's hard-hitting question at an Ellen taping: "We haven't actually made direct contact with aliens yet."

Don't worry! I missed it too! So the girl likes the National Treasure movies and asked about "the book of secrets" then wondered about aliens being real.

So you can read it as "direct contact" but we know they exist. Or you can dismiss it as talking to a young child.

Take that in stride with Ben Rich's comment about ET getting stranded "we have the technology to take him home".

One way of understanding that response to understand is that we are indirect evidence of intelligent life in the Universe, beyond our own.

... [A] healthy dose of skepticism is warranted, said Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, California.

For example, it seems unlikely that 234 separate alien societies would be sending out such similar signals more or less simultaneously, Shostak said.

"It would be like expecting us to send the same signals as the Abyssinians — it doesn't make a whole lot of sense," he told Space.com. "If I were a betting guy, I'd bet this is an artifact of the way they processed their data."

The article says that several astronomers advised about not publishing the paper without serious revisions. The outlook for the Borra announcement does not look promising. The article itself is pretty well written and worth a read. They end it with, "you cannot throw out the baby with the bath water" as being the reason the original announcement cannot be flat out dismissed.
