What are the chances of you turning on a walkie talkie and getting little bits of information about Area 51. I just got some walkie talkies and i live near a police station and i get them talking on it all the time. I was thinking if you did go to Area 51 and just maybe camped there within 2 miles (most walkie talkies only have a 2 mile range) and actually hearing them talking!. Just an idea.Do you think it will work?

They probably use a non standard frequency and have it scrambeld so no one hears them

My best guess is that they use encryted frequencies and only certain radios can decode they frequencies

More than likely, they make extensive use of "tempest hardened" communications equipment to prevent any unwanted electromagnetic transmissions from being intercepted from outside of the area.

Not only that, if you tried to camp out with a walkie-talkie within a 2-mile range from the facility, you'd already be well within their "shoot all intruders" range...

The place is surrounded by mountains. Mountains block RF. What radio people call a "Granite RFI filter". ( Geologists will note that it is actually basalt and tuff ). Very effective filter.

Not to mention, you can't get within 2 miles.

Too true. And yes, you can bet on encrytped transmissions... There's likely some unencrypted ones as well, but they won't sound like anything more than typical security radio talk. "Sector 4 secure....Roger" Not too revealing, now is it?

This site I came across claims to have all of the radio frequencies at Area 51 and Nellis AFB.

165.9130 BUGS & BODY MICROPHONES
173.6875 AIR FORCE BASE SECURITY
etc.

I garantee it would never work. All the radios at Area 51 use an encrypted frequency that is setup by NSA. All you'd hear is static nothing else

Actually, some of the "slueths" who creep around the Area 51 perimeter have attempted "data capture" with scanners. They have found that the Camo Dudes use a frequency assigned to FEMA. Also they are all completely digitally scrambled, so there is little to no chance of getting anything intelligent off of it.

Unfortunately, if you did get close enough for a walkie talkie to work, you would be shot and killed or detained (I'm not sure which would be worse). I'm sure they use encryption and non standard frequencies so that even if you amplified a walkie's capability it would not work.

Anyways, even if you do get decipherable messages they could be just government hoaxes. Im sure Area-51 knows people might try this, so why not send out understandable fake messages to make the person think they are getting something and quit there.

A quick question: I have 2 walkie talkies with a 2 mile range, 14 channels and 38 subchannels. How can I pick up e.g. police signals? Are the frequencies different from state to state?? How can I find out which freq. to use?
Sincerely
SP

This seems to cover most police radio frequencies, but likely does NOT cover the federal/FEMA radio frequencies. I would refer that kind of question to Astrocreep.

The Citizen's Guide to Police Scanners will cut the learning curved and help you quickly begin using a police scanner for entertainment, as a hobby, and more importantly, as a valuable information tool during an emergency disaster!

The guide is easy to read and is published in Portable Document Format (PDF) making it a snap to view right from your desktop complete with links and bookmarks. We also include frequency information for your area. 70 (8 1/2 x 11) pages.

Thanks again

Just out of curiosity, how do you guys across the pond stand on using a police scanner? I've often wondered. Over here in the UK you can be charged for having one in your posession if it has police/military frequencies stored in its memory or if you act on the information being transmitted.

A number of years ago a friend of mine was charged for having one in his car, despite the fact it didn't have any frequencies stored in the memory. He 'overheard' something local, went for a look, and bingo, the cops were already there. They searched his car, he ended up with the scanner being confiscated and a hefty fine, along with the whole incident being put on his record.

The cops official line was that he had been "acting on the information being transmitted" purely because he went for a look-see, and this was the part they considered illegal.

Just wondered.

REASONS WHY IT WOULD NOT WORK

1) Mountains would block most radio communications.
2) Being within two miles of the installation would get you busted if not killed.
3) Encryption is used.

As for security radio talk, they have special terms for the different areas (but you can decode what they are saying with the security manual that I have).

Even if you did get to hear what they would be saying, it would most likely be them talking about you being in the area listening to them...

The best thing you can do there is take photos of the base and aircraft. I wouldn't waste my time there on trying to listen to them. Even trying to fly a model airplane in would be more worth it (just before you guys make a thread on that, it has been done
).

Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, 2 miles!?!?!?!? lol, you would'nt even be able to get 10 miles near! you'd be shot instantly, lol.
And for the walkie talkie idea, lol, i doubt that the elite u.s secret military go to radio shack to buy their radio systems.
