I asked privately, but didn’t get a response. I could have made a dummy thread using as many punctuation marks as possible in the title in order to see what would be represented on the new topics, archive, and recent posts page.

Ironically, the top topics page displays all punctuation marks as far as I can tell. I would like some clarification on which punctuation marks are displayed on the new topics page. Some titles look silly when lacking the implied punctuation.

I was just thinking about this the other day. On the recent posts page (on mobile, at least), it seems the only punctuation or symbols shown in thread titles are periods and hyphens. Once you open a thread, though, any other punctuation is shown correctly.

As far as I know, most punctuation is gone from thread titles.
I think it was causing some problems.
I know that periods ...... and hyphens ----- still work.

So, if you have a question, you will have to format the sentence to ask it as the ????? will not work.

Thank's for sharing that with us, I've never seen it before.

It's a killer.

I'm certainly no stickler for grammar, everyone has their own abilities and styles. But most if the thread titles don't make sense and on face view it looks like we're a bunch of incoherent morons making threads with poor titles.

Many times I have to click a thread just to understand the title due to missing punctuation or dollar signs etc.

It's only a small problem I know, it would be super to get it fixed though.

It's a real nuisance, and I think it's fairly recent.
Many of my thread titles have semi-colons, if they're part of a series, and that wasn't originally causing any problems.
The current coding means that
Questions are displayed as statements
Quoted opinions are displayed as the opinion of the thread-maker
Strange names like "Jonesicke" appear in thread titles.

I've made quite a few threads here recently, and I am struggling with this exact problem. It drives me nuts trying to figure out ways around it. And worse, the rules here are that you must use the exact story title as it was written by the author. Well, that can't be, if the punctuation screws up.

I suggest we flag this thread, and hope SO can fix the problem.

It was implemented by SO for a very good reason. Yes, it's had an adverse effect on the aesthetics of thread titles and I'm also a stickler for correct punctuation in titles. Yes, it's an irritant to a few members and I include myself amongst them.

Nevertheless it was done for the best of reasons and it's a matter for owners/admins to disclose it if they choose. I'm sorry to be so obscure, but the reason for remaining quiet is linked to the reason for removing punctuation from thread lists.

Please be assured this post isn't intended to annoy, taunt or dismiss members and their questions. I've seen it being asked several times and wanted to offer something more than silence.

Question (kind of) answered and thread closed.
