I've always liked Educating Rita (Julie Walters and Michael Caine).
It's the same kind of theme as Pygmalion/My Fair Lady.
Older, well educated guy tutoring younger, less well educated woman in some intellectual pursuit that is designed to allow her to improve her social
class...while the subtext running through it is that a romance starts to blossom, and they both begin to fall for each other.
But what ends up happening is that it's the guy who ends up more smitten than the girl. The age-old tragedy of unrequited love. The irony of the
stronger, wiser man becoming, in the end, the weaker, needier, more pathetic figure.
I think it's intriguing. But it's also often too painful to watch.
