12 miles east of Te Araroa. The depth is 30.7

This is a developing story.

There was a 6.2 about 24 minutes before. There was a 5.2 in the same region about 6 hours ago.

Global Incident Map

It was changed from 7.2 to 7.1

It appears that the smaller quake 18 hours ago was felt by 100 people living in a remote community on the NE cape. It is not population dense, but is part of the popular Te Araroa hiking trail and it is difficult to say how many people are in the area at any given time.

Any links? We're are you getting this from? How bad is it? What does it mean? Tsunami?

I only find a 5,7 18 hours ago?

Looking now I'm seeing a report of 7.1 depth 30.7 km

I'm not seeing any other reports yet. I figure it'll still be a while before we know if there was any damage to anything.

I added the links. The depth is fairly shallow. Not sure about the population there. I will look for that.

The US Pacific warning Center measures it at 7.2 and only announced that Hawaii has no tsunami warning.

Shockwaves were felt throughout the North Island and the Nelson region, but concentrated on the Bay of Plenty and Wellington. The quake was at a depth of 55 kilometres and has been followed by a flurry of aftershocks, the largest being 6.2.Civil Defence is monitoring the situation and is not aware of any damage at the moment.

Looking at this, Gisborne and Tauranga may have felt it.

Ya it was down graded about half an hour after it happened. Still a 7.1 is pretty strong.

Yes, it depended on who measured it. But NZ news has it at a 7.1 now.

I hope not either. There was a 5.2 in Tonga, as well about 6 hours ago. It is along the same fault line and this fault cuts across main New Zealand's North. Not the North Island part. If that fault remains this active, it could be a problem.

Communications advisor Sheridan Gundry says no official tsunami warning has been received but has urged anyone living on the Gisborne region coastline who felt the earthquake as “long and strong” to get to higher ground or as far inland as possible.

People are being advised to take their radios and pets with them if possible.Almost 5000 people said they felt the tremor which struck just after 4.30am.

Now the title of the article has added

potential tsunami threat issued
