I think they should do it in the US too. It could be the shortcut to citizenship our leaders seem to be looking for. Serve in the military and show your respect for our nation and our way of life and earn your citizenship. Although, I question the wisdom of handing a bunch of refugees rifles and teaching them how to shoot...

Funny you should say that, someone I know who is a ex para who went on to join the Foreign legion when his unit was disbanded stated the same thing for people wanting to come into Europe...

Very doubtful that many migrants of working age would bother with that route from what I have witnessed in London??. Shame as it would give you a identity, you would learn the culture and language plus you would be respected as you have given something to the country, you would also learn skills that would turn you from a zero to very low skilled worker to someone that would most likely be in demand..

But why bother when you can just plead ignorance and do things the illegal way..

According to Spiegel Online (German source) Secretary of Defense von der Leyen opposes going back to compulsory service, which has been disestablished in 2011.

(Damn those lucky b******s!)

OP could you please add a little more to the original posting? It was vague and didn't include your personal take on the issue, or a summary for that matter. It would help for you to put the story/message in your own word, otherwise we all might as well just be posting up a link like so

A cabinet member is proposing a draft.
I think it would be necessary when your presidential SCIENTIST overruns your country with hostiles.
It was too late to modify it.

No, the military does not want conscripts. They want a modern professional fighting force.

As for the OP this an idea floated by the interior minister, which the military has firmly rejected.

I agree. I have always been against compulsory service. Everyone I served with wanted to be there. That's the way it should be.

I agree. All it does is force the unwilling or the incapable into a world they never wanted to be a part of in the first place. That world is for people like me. People willing to fight, to kill, and to shoulder the burden of our foreign policy right or wrong.

What a big mess it is going on over there, things are definitly not looking good. Telling them to stock up on food and supplies. Maybe they need a wall but make them build it. Those refugees need jobs. Send Trump down there ;D

Other countries do it, and it seems to work just fine.

And when war breaks out we institute a draft anyway. So when the chips are down and the troops are really needed we call on conscripts to 'be' the modern professional fighting force we need.

Even among volunteers there are some who fit in the service very well and some who don't. They aren't rejected often, but rather forged into soldiers. When you are there - you are a soldier. When you leave - you become who or whatever you want to be. It is your choice. But while you wear the uniform you are a soldier. I did my time in the military. I remember looking around in boot camp thinking, "Some of these guys aren't going to make it." They made fine soldiers.

conscription is a GREAT idea.

But the first round of conscripts need to be taken from below:

A family member of:

The serving President.

Serving Politcians.

Foreign Policy Advisors

Surpreme court Judges.

Senior Civil servents.

CEO's and Directors of a defence contractor operating within the USA or its allies.

Any Banker of a Bank that has either been bailed out by the USA or is Owed money by the USA or its allies.

And they must serve as enlisted members in front line units.

Watch how the wars dry up then......

Easy, for that you have to know how conscription works in Germany.

Before 2010, every male between 16 and 25 years had to either consript or talk themselves out (pacifist), doing one year social work. This rule was lifted and now our "Bundeswehr" has lesser people than before.

I don´t mind bringing back conscription. I´m all for it, because the training and discipline will help you for life, if you go the military route. If not, you still help out driving ambulances or doing work at retirement homes, helping the general population.
