My first post so go easy on me. Anyway my question is why can't we create our own networks that are independent of marketing/ government influence? It might be beyond my technical capacity, but it seems enough people here have the capability to easily do this. Perhaps it's just me, but I am just about completely sick of marketing, eavesdropping, and controlling parties dictating what I should or shouldn't be interested in, or what I should or shouldn't want to buy today. Thanks

my guess would be the huge companies would ruin any attempt at their monopolies

Do you mean ATS specifically? or the general population?

If you mean the general population, well it's because the general pop. are morons who don't know much about the technology they use and rely on the ease and comfort of things like google.

I still use google. Guess that makes me a moron too.

I'm sure, however I'd rather pay them 50$ a month to leave me alone than 50$ a month for service that's turned into garbage. Maybe they'll come up with that next.

Ats would be fine with me, I've had enough of the general population already. I use Google too- but it's getting painful to find what I'm looking for. Guess I'm a moron too.

Naw you're only a moron if you click those "Meet sexy Asians in your area" ads.

google thinks they know us so well! and they do! That's what's troubling.

Because you have to use their stuff. Towers, satellites, transponders...all theirs. And they cost Millions of $$$. Thats why.

They don't own the airwaves. We could go FM radio, or morse code on shortwave sets. Theres some pigeons out back on the telephone wires.

OP: Don't take it personal, your idea is a good one. Damn nosey computer monopolies anyway.

Just thats like asking how can we drive around without gasoline or turn on our lights without electricity. Its doable but more time consuming.

Yeah...that was my point here. They hold the means to transmit...mostly...cause they hold the $$$$ which holds the power.

But sure...after all. There have been off-shore radio stations on their own frequencies.

I'm sure for a lot of reasons. From ease of access, not having the time to use an alternative or expertise(for some) or even having another option, not being aware of them being invasive to most everyone they know uses them(such as the social sites).

Well the surveillence and all suck but lets face it google is the best search engine and it knowing us all so well while creepy does allow you to find the things you are looking for easier than anything else. Other than that - try an ad blocker for ads specifically. I know that doesnt change much.

There are secure email services out there. Use slack to communicate with friends or business partners.

And for all those other problems you list - the blockchain community's developers working diligently to find solutions to most of these things. Said community being made up of very talented tech wise and smart INDIVIDUALS. Peer to peer services with no companies only individuals working together is the future and is already being developed round the clock.

Why not develop a system that uses a randomly generated DNS each time we log on?

Why do we buy a carton of milk at the grocery rather than raise our own cow? Convenience.

We choose to do our own thing in our lives and that means, still, to be almost like everybody else. Among us are people that look beyond the surface to what they can do to own the cow. And we line up when the haul out a new cow. Sometimes we wonder why we are in line, but, still, we stand there mostly in silence waiting for the cow to deliver its sustenance that we crave. Who's to blame?

They neither have a monopoly nor 'own' the airwaves. Web Browsers are simply the tool you use to gain access to the net. So, yes if you are technically inclined to, you can create your own browser to surf the web. But I guarantee that someone else has already done what you are attempting. There are many many browsers out there already, different ones built for different reasons from security up to state spying and marketing sales and even some specifically for kids. You just have to look.

And no, Google is not the best at searching. They sale access to top search results and are pretty much owned by left wing radicals. No, it just seems that they are best because of their own spyware that you agree to by using them, so that they can advertise to you more easily and accurately.

And yes, I use Google, but that is because I am inherently lazy when it comes to technology, and I simply don't care if they know anything about me. Not to mention most programs these days are specifically designed to run smoothly on google and firefox.

Infrastructure - the only limitation.

Cuba has an intranet of sorts that's maintained, hosted and administrated by the people, for the people. It works really well.
Motherboard has a documentary on it.

They don't even have porn on it

The internet could have been so beautiful, it was ruined by corporations and greed.
Not even to mention the darkweb.
You only see 30% of the actual internet.
The other 70% is dedicated to illegal activities.

My gripe is that the services I pay for to access info or products is blatantly tampered with by mega corps who pay to show their crap first, even if it's totally way off course of what I'm looking for. On top of that I am being profiled and studied for more sh#t I don't want to see, or do, all of which is stored against my will or choice. If these wonderful services pay to invade my privacy, I shouldn't have to pay to use their services, as I'm not getting honest results, without influence. We should have the option to opt out of marketing and profiling by proxy...

Perhaps study up on networking, once you understand the basics of an intranet, extranet and wide area network you'll better understand how everything relates to infrastructure.

It's like cable tv - they own the wires, sattelites etc. so they own the airtime.
Same with ISP''s, websites that you access etc.
They own it, so they can manipulate and make you adhere to THEIR terms of service.

My advice would be to ditch social media, it's an easy first step.

Sincerely
GG
