I agree about the whole control issue. Parents should be in charge.
I do think these were more in the line of suggestions than dictates and I highly doubt the kids will have to report back about it. Imagine the embarrassment of a child who can't have a family dinner because daddy's in jail.

Ouch. Or divorced, drunk, whatever. My dad mostly ignored me, same diff.

I have been a teaching for 5 years now and have always believed that kids should not be burdened with homework. Instead, I have used fun learning techniques that can replace boring homework essays and assignments.
