Problem is that for the general public he is a poor debater, on the flipside he is a good lecturer/orator.
He ran too far away from his dad in his run losing him enthusiastic supporters(mix of hardccore fiscal hawks, libertarians, anti-establishments), and at the same time tried to appeal to people who are not convinced by his style of arguments. These people were two groups, cruz like supporters(stereotypical conservatives), and trump like supporters(anti-pc, nationalist), thus he was also competing against them.

Deep down the guy is a libertarian, but he compromises principles to focus on a few things and garner support.

It is quite obvious that Hillary supporters are so completely just like Hillary, in that they are just as corrupt as her and would still vote for her regardless of what she has done, or will do in the future.

Traditionally, when a politician was exposed in their corruption, everyone abandoned ship for fear of being seen supporting that corruption, but now we have people blatantly thumbing their noses at all the crime, greed, and gross negligence, giving new meaning to putting lipstick on a pig.
