To me he was the blue owl with a name I couldn't pronounce...until someone called him Woody...

That's when he became real to me...

And later, in posts, his mother called him Nick.

As a mother who lost a son...as a mother who's lost a son.........

I've been seeing owls everywhere. At first it was a surprise, but then it was too painful. Stop it! Stop it!

But now I see him, both of them, smiling in the owls.

Thank you, Woody. Thank you for being so generous, so alive, even now. Thank you for that unbearable pain of Love.

Enjoy your freedom.

Fishy

Dammit man...

He was a warrior that's for sure and a damn fine example of a proper human being.

Here's to you, woodwardjnr, 🍻

It is damn hard to star and flag a post about a member passing...

That being said, I will miss the blue owl. It is a shame to think there will be no more posts of genuine civility and erudition from Woodward again.

Way to go on your own terms! May we learn something from not just what you posted here on ATS but how you faced life and the road's end we all must face. I hope to have as much dignity and courage when my time comes around.

(These are thoughts just coming from a long time lurker with not much more to add that has not already been said)

Condolences to all family and friends.

SkepticOverlord has amended the title to woowardjnr's last thread and put a black band across the ATS logo to commemorate a beloved member so near and dear to the ATS community.

Here is his member profile and his social wall.

R.I.P. Woody. Thank you for sharing your heart in your most fragile of moments. We should all be so courageous.

Didn't know him personally but it still made me sad to see this. But it is kinda cool to see that so many members care about a fellow member here.

Yesterday I went to do something that I probably do a hundred times a day - every day... Quickly pop onto Facebook to check for new messages and posts from friends and relatives.

As the page opened, the very first post on my feed was from Nick's account. I smiled in reaction because it had been awhile since I'd seen Nick post.

That smile did not last long, as I realized what I was reading...

Numb and feeling empty - the only thing I could think to do was to come here and reluctantly share the news.

There are still a number of us around from the old ATS chatroom - the few dozen souls who can recall what it was like to have a chat window open, as well as a unique web browser open for ATS, BTS and Above Politics - each... back when each one required a different URL.

I can't think back to those days without Wood coming to mind. Always there, in chat. Always upbeat. Always saying exactly what needed to be said to make everyone else smile.

Later, after chat went away, Woods gift to us did not. Chaotic threads, full of disagreement and anger - suddenly would change tone because Wood would inject some rationality and compassion into them. It's an amazing thing.

His ability to do that never stopped. Not even now. Looking at that stained glass owl still fills me with this sense that I've found a port of sanity in the storm. A reassurance that there is good in this world.

That is who Nick Woodward is to me... The sane and caring voice that makes me realize the world isn't quite as ugly a place as I sometimes think it to be... a voice that makes me aware that I can be a better man than I am.

I miss you Nick.

Truly sorry about the news. I never had the opportunity to get to know him, much to my detriment from the words I have read here.

May he rest in peace and sleep well.

Sad news indeed. It`s never easy to see people, especially this early, leave this world but perhaps his mission here and as a human being was complete so time has come for him to move to the next stage of life, whatever that may be. He seemed to have fought bravely for a very long time and I`ll be damned if he hasn`t earned a new life without pain in the eyes of divine powers.

Live in peace wherever you are.

That is truly sad to hear. We didn't agree much on the main forums, but he was always fun to hear from in the off topic sections. His voice will be missed, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. Too many of the best of us are going home lately.

But one thing is certain, he is at rest now and hopefully at peace. He fought long and hard. No one could have possibly asked for more.

I know we were likely all aware of his condition, but he very seldom every complained about it. That is rare in a person and something admirable. I know it is something I will remember and strive to hold myself to.

When you hear someone is battling something like this, you really hope they can miraculously pull through. What a nice guy, it seems like he fought honorably and with dignity. His announcement post was brimming with courage.
