IMO cheap french wine is the worst, but to each their own.

It is. The french still lead when it comes to the highest quality pricey wines, but their cheap ones are crap. If I don't feel like investing in a grand wine, I look for ones from California, Australia, or Spain (the first two rather hard to find here).

Personally, though I have sympathy for the wine makers, I think they just need to accept that they'll have to strive to compete in the market for cheaper wines. Everyone would benefit from that choice.

58.2 liters a year per person,
1.3 glasses a day per person. (over 14 yrs.)

Most people drink a glass a day, from what I see around me. Though less women do- I think there's some men doing their 1.3 for them.

I hate red wine,but I'd drink it,glad I don't live in france

We don"t just drink red wine in France.. we have many cépages which have been copied throughout the world...

Most of the wines that you have already tasted from other countries have all originated from France (or at least the original plants).

My in-laws have an independant vineyard over here in the Loire valley and are being screwed big time by the fashionable "New world" wines, including Chinese...

I can understand that the cheap tanker Spanish wine was offloaded into the streets... will be a pong in a couple of days though...

I would do the same in order to show that I back up the country that adopted me 28 years ago.

Kindest respects

The group is known for having carried out wine-related attacks in France, enraged by the falling prices of French wine and the country’s market being flooded by cheap foreign drinks. In June this year, CRAV accused several French wholesale wine sellers of importing cheap Spanish wines and predatory pricing. In April they hijacked five tankers of Spanish wine on the border and emptied the equivalent of 90,000 bottles of the fluid in protest against what they consider unfair competition.

I love the French. Genuinely and sincerely; it's a beautiful country and the culture suits me.

BUT the above makes me laugh for the sheer Gallic irony. The French have 'flooded' Northern Europe with cheap wine for years (an ex-girlfriend from the Savoie region once said good French wine in the UK was only table wine in France). It's typical that what's good for the goose is never good for the gander. They're pissed at the Spanish for profiting off the same market forces and advantages they've had for years.

Level playing fields are for everyone and these guys think only they get to play on one.

any reason why they feel they cant compete with cheap spanish wine?
perhaps this is an indication that the cheap french wine industry needs to improve?

You're right, i can see both sides now. I honestly don't know enough about the Wine industry in Europe but appreciate the input. It would seem it's become a War of Wines or Whines

The fact is that the EU issue quotas for imports whether countries like it or not. The biggest producer of olives, Greece, is forced to export all their olives then buy them back in from Italy !! This makes olive oil in Greece one of the most expensive in Europe whereas of course it should be dirt cheap. Madness! The same happens with wine or beef or wheat. The EU insist that countries "share" and as a result the biggest wine producer France is forced to import other countries wine just like here in Britain where we export our beef and then import Irish. Utter bollocks!

I'd like to hear more from Lagomorphe too to get his 'boots on the ground' perspective.

The Spanish can do cheap wine like nobody else. They sell it in litre cartons for the equivalent of a dollar. You can imagine how good carton wine is at that price. I've tried it over there and it's okay enough for making sangria with; not so good if you like wine to taste nice

Quotas Kandisky Quotas...

The REAL INDEPENDANT French viniculteurs will NEVER flood the market with crap wine... I can assure you that and invite anyone who thinks otherwise to come and visit our family vineyard free of charge... although you pay your own air ticket lol.

Foreign held cellars may... which unfortunately is becoming the trend in certain areas such as Bordeaux and the Beaujolais regions who have had such a fancy time for so many years and are now selling off their vineyards to foreign investors such as the Chinese et al.

What you may hear smeared all over the net and on MSM is not the same as what is actually happening.

There is much suffereing in the agricultural field over here and the EU people in Brussels do not help with their crappy rules that they pile out every Friday afternoon after lavishing themselves on the best food and Chateau St Georges St Emilion at the expense of the European taxpayer... (I was in a restaurant sitting at the table next to EU workers/dimplomats in Brussels a month ago... HORROR story when I saw what they were putting on their bill...)

When I asked them the question as to who paid, the response was "mind your own business" I even offered them a drink at the end of the evening for which they accepted (wanted to get more info)... Basically they said that they don't need to know who is paying for their lavish slap ups as long as it is a perk of the job... Total TOSSPOTS the lots of the leeches...

Therefore I say WELL DONE that people in France are taking things into their own hands.

Vive la France and long live equality, fraternity and freedom... and free speech.

Some people stand up to the oppression and I think that this only the foreplay of what is going to happen in France over the next 5 years or so... Watch this space : ............

Kindest respects
