Eight Japanese children coping with contamination worries in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2011, which displaced about 100,000 residents, spent the week away from their prefecture, romping in the outdoors of the Big Island.

Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii flew the children -- ages 9 to 13 -- along with two chaperones to the island for seven days "of sun and fun in Hawaii, a chance to play outside their homes and at the beach, without the worry of radiation exposure," said Faye Shigemura, president of the Higashi board of directors.

...

"Their plea to us was to enable their children to freely play outside ... even if just for one week," said Shigemura, who joined the children with other temple members Friday on Hawaii island.

I thought things like that only existed in post-apocalyptic movies. The unbelievable thing is, it's real life.

It sort of reminds me of what's happening in Beijing.

Beijing pollution: Schools keep children indoors

What kind of a world will we have in 20 years? Why can't people wake up?

We need massive changes now, or we're facing a future that will be so bleak, no one will want to live in it.

It's yet another reason not to have children in my opinion.

Are they trying to convince us radiation levels in Japan are dangerous or that so far, Hawaii is still uncontaminated?

Tourism gets a boost.

Are you questioning the motives of the people who arranged the trip to Hawaii? Are you insinuating the trip is just being done for public relations reasons?

The motives seem to be genuinely altruistic to me:

"Plane fares are our largest expense at a little over $11,000. To keep the cost of flying to a minimum, we try to keep the ages of children below the adult-fare age," she said. In the future Higashi would like to include high school students and help "as many less fortunate families as possible," Shigemura said.

Children were selected for the this year's visit based on letters submitted by their mothers, Shigemura said.

"Their plea to us was to enable their children to freely play outside ... even if just for one week," said Shigemura, who joined the children with other temple members Friday on Hawaii island.

I'm sure there are plenty of places in Japan that children can play outside without having to go to hawaii surely.

Just 8 children?

Life will go on. Unless we are smacked by a large meteor traveling at supersonic speed. Then all bets are off.
BTW , that is the same question we asked ourselves in the 70s .

Yah, three mile island freaked everyone out. And it was just an almost meltdown, not three mega power plants exploding.

So much more than that. Pollution , the ozone layer , ....we even realized the positive values of nuclear energy. I guess I will get berated for that one...

Yah, you might. The public was sold "NEW" "CLEAR" power. They had senate hearings in which they held up a glass of water and said theres enough power in here to power a city, blah blah. The power source of 'clear water' was a 'new' concept. New and clear, nuclear.

The kids were taken on tours... "See how safe it is kiddies?"

As of late you've been total doom and gloom from that perspective.

They are telling bigger and bigger lies, the larger the lie the more it hurt to hear the truth about it.
