The best fun is listening to Scots in my local pubs (in England) whinging about how crap England is and how Scotland should be free. I tell them to # off back to Scotland if they don't like it. Been physically attacked a few times in life for saying that, but I'll keep on saying it to the auld whinge bags.

Yeah, nobody is advocating any of that.

I don't see how reinforcing our current situation with yet more government will help.

If they hate westminster so much what is it that makes them think anyone else will do better? What do they actually want?

Ask them...they don't know.

I had this conversation with a friend a few months ago, he's a rabid nationalist, the type who lets movies like braveheart influence his political views. He said this - the SNP are a stepping stone, I don't like them either, but once we're independent we will replace them with a better party!

I said what better party?

One will come!

He really believes this! He's a good friend but I can't hide my contempt for this idiotic assumption. If there was a better party what are they waiting for? If they're so much more in favour of proper independence why let the SNP do all of the groundwork? Sounds lazy to me, I don't like the SNP but at least they're fighting for what they believe.

This is the typical crap people talk...truth is it's anti-english sentiment for the most part and always has been. It's the Scots that can't let go...your typical Englander doesn't give a hoot about any of that crap. Scotland seems to be a nation of butt-hurt, cildish people who blame everything on England.

Lol, nah, the classic Braveheart image is their favourite, you know the Mel Gibson one shouting Freedom!!

...with any luck some US member with distant Scottish ancestry will post it in this thread while foaming at the mouth.
You should have seen the threads before the Scots voted to remain in the UK a year or so ago, that image was posted so often it was pathetic.

Exactly, I lived in England as a boy, I can't even deny that it's true. Most pubs in London have a drunk Scot in them, who makes a twat of himself, gets legless and starts gobbing off about the "Eeeenglish baaaaaastaaards!"

It's embarassing.

Boom boom!

A nation that bases its political views on an historically inaccurate, and quite frankly, crap movie.

I remember seeing that image, literally, everywhere. Driving on some of the motorways and people had it on houses, in fields, EVERYWHERE. It was more funny than anything else.

Haha! I know!
That said, I have very close friends who are Scottish and love the place we call home here in England.
They moved here same as me, I'm from Swansea originally, and if England are playing anyone other than Wales I'll support England, whatever the sport. England is my home, my child was born here with my English wife.

I've argued with Scots in my local pub who were supporting France against England...WTF?!
Live in a country and hate the country? I don't get it and just say # off back then if you hate it so much, #ing traitors.

I think think it is pretty clear what they want. To be an independent country within the EU. Just like the majority of European countries are.

Nothing anti English about that.

How can a country be independent if it's controlled by an outside government? Basically, the EU negates any countries government.

Struggle to think of a single pro Indy Scottish poster who ever used that image. (Except possibly solo. I might have to give you solo).

I do remember lots of anti Indy posters using it claiming that it was the pro Indy argument.

Yeah, they do that here all the time. If England is competing in a sport they gather to watch and cheer when England lose.

When andy Murray plays tennis they cry about ow he's a Scot but the news reporters (who are mostly English) refer to him as "British"

this is the clown mentality - I've lived among this most of my life...people think that I have a problem because I question this.

I have family in England, friends, I lived there...I don't see the English people as some privileged nation that benefits in ways we Scots don't, your typical citizen, be they Scot, English, Welsh or Irish are pretty much all in the same boat...we should be sticking together not creating division.

But they seem to lap that junk up like sick little puppies, it's pretty depressing. I have to now travel home through Glasgow city centre, it'll be full of semi-drunk louts in guy fawkes masks waving saltires.

the march may have been peaceful...it's the aftermath that nobody else sees that's the problem.

I suspect a large percentage of Scots voted to remain in the EU solely to try and force another 'leave the UK' referendum.
Members on ATS stated that in threads, it was pretty clearly a tactical vote for some.

Because there is a major difference between being run by an outside government and being part of a international organisation.

Do you really think the UK is run by the EU?

I disagree. I still believe it was almost a fear move. Like I said before, "Better the devil you know" mentality.

I don't thinkit's clear at all, this debate has been raging for years here in Scotland, they are not unified in their outlook.

they all want different things for mostly selfish reasons. they hold firm some ill-gotten belief that the UK has somehow dragged their great and b rave nation down.

I think they're dragging themselves down and taking a few others with them.

they lost the referendum...they mostly lost in the EU referendum...in short, they're losers.
