Gobs and gobs.
But it's not floating. It's falling. Around and around the Earth.

The videos really look like space junk.

I disagree, the fireball looks like space junk, the videos look like your atypical YouTube Videos and do not resemble fireballs whatsoever.

Found this at KSL.

"Patrick Wiggins, NASA/JPL solar system ambassador to Utah, confirmed for KSL that the object was a rocket body used in the launch of Yaogan Weixing-26, a Chinese satellite that was launched in December 2014. Wiggins said the rocket body was about 149 kilometers above Earth when it was over Utah."

THIS ARTICLE is saying it was the Chinese Long March 7 booster re-entry.

Based on tracking data provided by the Joint Space Operations Center, McDowell said the Long March 7 rocket reentered about 9:40 p.m. over Utah.

Problem I have with that is that I saw it to my South West, traveling towards the South East. Utah is much further to the East. Can't say I agree that it entered over Utah. The time is about right, though I'd say it was closer to 9:30.

Not much debris, if any, from a booster stage would make it to the surface.

Ah, so that CZ-7 re-entry listed there is the same one referenced in the article I just linked? Still strange that the ground track shown on the Aerospace site doesn't put it over us at all. Even the "uncertainty" tracks are off. Of course, since the entry was earlier than anticipated, these tracks might be for the planned time, not current time.

Okay, according to Aerospace:

Reentry Prediction Predicted Reentry Time: 28 July 2016 15:55 UTC ± 9 hours

My sighting was around 4:30 UTC (July 28), and their predicition model has a nine hour leeway. That would make it about right if it came in 9 hours early. Looks like you nailed it after all, Phage.

And 9 hours is about 6 orbits. The tracks of which do not appear on the chart. Move north two more orbits than shown in blue and viola!

Indeed. I rest your case.
Still thrilled to have seen it, was quite the spectacle.

It was a predicted reentry which occurred a bit earlier than predicted.
