I lived in cidade de deus and rocinha for a year. Militarised police death squads, pre-teens strung out on glue and cheap coke and teenagers with automatic weapons and hand grenades are too common. Weirdly I only ever felt in any real danger from the police.

TPTB use classified surveillance. It is awfully suspicious to me that the Police grabbed him just after he uploaded the video taken on a phone. Almost like they get special access and could see the location the video was uploaded from. All these special secrets and powers; supposedly for our own good, and our own protection. And here we see a demonstration in the wild. It will be used against us. Not for us.

Not sure what special access or classified tech you are speculating about but like I said this is nothing secret that location and time can be garnered from digital images or videos by anybody.

Then why are so many, in this thread, dead set against the idea that the Rio Police used his social media post to identify and kidnap him. Typical public behavior when a conspiracy suddenly becomes true. They say "no it's not", "no it's not", "no it's not", until it becomes obvious then the person who was ridiculed for the warning is dismissed out of hand with "well everyone knows that."

The athlete and his journalist girlfriend, Laura McQuillan, have arrived in Toronto just days after Mr Lee was bundled into a car by men believed to be military police officers and forced to withdraw cash from two ATMs.

The Olympic Torch was extinguished last night
by government protesters who took to the streets over back pay
there was a brief scuffle between police and the protesters with tear gas.

On Wednesday night, government employees angry over delayed salary payments took to the streets in Angra dos Reis, a city near Rio de Janeiro, and confronted the procession carrying one of the Olympic torches.

Chaotic scenes caught on amateur video show a crowd of young people appearing to steal the torch from the procession and then extinguish it. Local news reports said that the Brazilian military eventually disbanded the protests using tear gas and rubber bullets, and in return were showered with rocks and bricks by the crowd. One child was reportedly injured. The torch relay was temporarily halted.

Outpourings of anger have plagued Brazil, which is about to welcome an estimated half a million tourists and athletes for the quadrennial Games. The state of Rio de Janeiro, where the Games are being hosted, is in the midst of a crippling cash crunch, and hasn't paid some government employees in more than two months. Crime is also on the rise, and Brazilian police and paramilitary forces have struggled to cope as the financial crisis has led the government to reduce their numbers.

So not only have they not paid some gov employees for 2 months, but others have been laid off. Probably without back pay. And this group, of former and currently disgruntled employees, intercepted the torch and put it out.

The Olympics are showing the world our true face.

Just some heads up for anyone wondering and asking, I will try to explain. We have basically two types of polices responsible for public security in day-by-day. The Military Police and the Civil Police. Both polices controlled by the STATE of Rio de Janeiro, not the city itself. The military police acts as a preventive police meanwhile the civil one is responsible for the investigative stuff. The sad and most important part is that both are steeped in corruption (Be involving money public or connection with drug traffic), they have a scary lack of preparation to deal with everyday situations, for example, it's common to see cases of racism and discrimination inside the favelas and militia groups formed by cops.

Furthermore all, they decide to host the biggest sporting event in the world in the city that kills more people each day that the war in Iraq. The police DEFINITELY do not know the basic necessary for communication in English, much less a moral code able to guide tourists and not extort money.

This is Brazil, a country burning by corruption and discrimination that begins in the government and directly affects our society.

Apparently Facebooks' WhatApp is not sharing data with the local authorities in Brazil.

The country recently fined Facebook 11.6 million over this.







And now a Judge has ordered WhatsApp shut down for 72 hours.

Well. Isn't that curious. Just at the last moment the private security has failed, and the local Rio Police now get to handle security outside the venue.

Just some cardboard in the basement caught fire at the Olympic village. That's all. Oh and filled the stairwell with smoke. So everyone had to evacuate. But the fire department eventually did show up, and everyone is back inside now.

By the way, these are the same Australian athletes who were delayed 3 days because they said the Olympic village wasn't safe.

For the low, low price of $8 million dollars, the Brazilian government snapped up this swell piece of repurposed military surveillance hardware. Sure, there are already a reported 85,000 total cops and soldiers plus an unknown number of private security forces patrolling the streets, but since they can’t be everywhere all the time, it’s probably for the best that Rio has decided to go full Panopticon.

As Fast Company reported on Wednesday, a private contractor employed by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice will be will operating Simera, a surveillance system built by Logos Technologies and originally utilized by the U.S. Department of Defense in Iraq and Afghanistan.

... well isn't that interesting. I guess it is out in the open now. The classified tech is being used, and they still posture themselves as using it for us. Not against us. All evidence to the contrary.

Some tweets from this morning, but last night the Military Police removed some artists who were still occupying a building in protest. I never could find out what the protest was about. In my opinion an iron curtain has now descended over the information coming out of Rio.
