Snapchat truly scares the crap out of me for the facial recognition technology tech they have got going on and how many use it. That app can literally mimic your expressions and everything. You know that video we saw here of a guy making a speech from either Bush or Obama (cant remember which?) that never happened using this tech mimicing their faces combined with his own voice and similar tech applied to their voices? Well Snapchat, which started as a dick pic app for christ sakes, is a step away from that if not there already for all we know.

I am way less concerned with Pokemon Go and the government lol. First off Pokemon comes from Japan. Secondly, the app has a few permissions sure but it is not actively recording anything and not everybody plays it. Facebook has 5x the amount of permissions on your device and everyone and their mother has it. Do not be so paranoid about Uncle Sugar watching you find a Bulbosaur.

There are however real more practical underlying concerns with the game which you touched on. People searching for a pokemon being led into a swamp (happened to a friend yesterday lol), construction site, walking down roadways, any number of dangerous places. Black teen might wander into a George Zmans yard looking for Pikachu and get killed. People doing it while driving. The list goes on and on.

But i thought membership here cheered on the Darwin Awards.

That being said outside St Louis some guys were using an in game bonus of sorts that you can plant to lure others to them searching for it and then robbing these players as gunpoint. #ty people those guys.

I downloaded yesterday after caving (: us 90s kids need something to bring us together!

Google's / Niantic's Ingress has been around for awhile now, and Pokemon Go is essentially the same thing with a slightly different flavor.

Google claims that the data was being used to improve their pathfinding and GPS accuracy as the players' GPS has to be on the entire time while playing the game.

As far as the government needing a Pokemon Go game to 'spy' on people, I would say they have better and much more efficient means to spy on people besides using a game.

This is just more data mining by corporations because big data is big business and profits these days.

It might be a fad but it's seriously fun to walk around, find pokemon, find pokespots, find gyms and see other people with that grin that's saying : Yep! I'm playing Pokemon too... >_<

Spying on people? Well they we're already doing it with google accounts, apple accounts and a multitude of others.

Seriously, this game will probably make people more healthy and more informed of their surroundings. The pokestops are actually a great travel partner as it shows every point of interest in any city. I've found things in my own city that I never even looked at before.

If there is one game out there that could help to bring peace on earth, well that's the one.

People have been playing Ingress for years without much trouble? Other than maybe someone asking what they were doing roaming around looking at their phones. What trouble should they expect?

You do realize that one group of exceptionally stupid criminals used the app for this so far, right?

They screwed up when they forgot that "using the app requires you to sign in on a non-burner phone," and "parking in the same parking lot where you are luring your victims is an excellent way to meet a bunch of cops."

AKA: stupid people try new things they don't really understand, earn stupid prizes, and the media loves a good story about a new fad / toy / tech gone awry. E.g. people targeting runners for their Nike's and people targeting new iPhone users for their phones.

Second verse, same as the first.

The truth is that the Pokemon are real and have entered from an alternate universe through a doorway created by CERN.
They must all be captured soon or we are doomed!

So I'm waiting out front of a restaurant last night. We're told it's going to be a 20-30 minute wait, but we're cool with that.

I pull out my phone and say, "Well, might as well see if there are any Pokemon around..."

My girl groans at me and says, "How old are you?!"

Just at that moment another guy my ages walks by, overhears the exchange and laughs, "Yeah man I'm doing that too! There are some around here..." and gives me a nod of approval.

It's a game. If you take it to seriously you have a problem. If you don't like it, don't play it.

Not everything in life is out to harm you or make your life worse. Most people worry and get themselves all worked up and tweaked around by conspiracies that never will have any impact on them in any realistic way.

It's a game. Don't play it if you don't want to. People that get themselves into trouble with it would just get into trouble with something else. You can't fix stupidity, and we shouldn't be nannies to everyone else.

It took them 75 years after pearl harbor, but the second wave of the Japanese invasion is finally here...

They softened the minds of a generation over twenty years with those pokemons but the day finally came

The camera is on for the Augmented reality part to show the pokemon in the real world, so yes the camera is recording and could potentially transmit the data, it however isn't saving the recorded data to the users phone

It most certainly is not, at least on Android (I can't speak for other platforms). Prove me wrong. Go ahead and decompile the apk, and show me where the required permissions are requested. Show me where the intents are broadcast. Point me to where in the smali the method calls to start video capture or live stream the camera surface are.

Anyone who knows anything about android development and reverse engineering could prove it in a matter of minutes, so why don't they?

they will collect every piece of data they possibly can. because thats the only way they can personalize your experience. or thats the excuse they use, anyway. but the real truth is that agencies are paying impressive money to access said data and log it for logistics purposes, mainly for marketing. the point is to make you spend. all these people running around and catching pokemon and visiting virtual locations by registering themselves via a data plan that is not free. they have to PAY for every foot they move that is not within range of free wifi. i looked it up precisely because of this craze and there is no such thing as unlimited mobile data. if you want to be able to roam around while playing this game to make full use of the augmented reality, you have to pay for as much data as it takes to compile that world and present it functionally. which comes out to...well, you do the math. and just think, all it took was pokemon to make people pay out the sphincter for the privilege of technology-complemented make believe.

I've been interested in Pokemon for years...watching and playing...
I can't for the life of me get into Pokemon Go....the number one reason is that when I'm outside, I want to enjoy the outdoors...not have my face glued to my mobile device....Literally the only time I use my mobile is if I need directions or need to make a call/text....

It's hard to make the call whether it's worth it or just a fad though....some people really enjoy it...but I'm not one of them....

Sorry, not "illegal", frowned upon, reason for suspicion. Because authorities can't ID faces.

And that is for the cameras.

Wes tboro Baptist Church recruits Jigglypuff, a Pokémon, against LGBT community on Pokémon Go

The new augmented reality game, which connects to a user's phone GPS, sent fans wandering to their local parks, historical landmarks and churches — including the Westboro Baptist Church. As people across the country devoted their weekends to catching Pokemon, one user noticed that the church, known for its opposition to the LGBT movement, was listed as a gym on Pokemon Go.

So that user claimed it, using a Pokemon named Clefairy. Its nickname is "LoveIsLove."

But WBC is fighting back.

The Westboro Baptist Church is fighting back, using one of the most commonly known Pokémon: Jigglypuff.

@stephmsolis We recruited Jigglypuff to deal with the sodomite loveislove Clefairy for us: t.co...

"We try to speak whatever language is being spoken," said Steve Drain, an elder at the church.
