Not to be picky, but did you mean, perhaps, "...there is no way this Earth is the same planet we were born on"? Seems to fit your premise better.
I remember those books from childhood, and always saw "Berenstain". That's 50+ years of memory. I looked, because the name was so long, and unusual for me, I wanted to know how to spell it.
The maps, well, those can be distorted, because flat maps don't always reflect things accurately. I suspect that is the issue there.
That said, I know of one thing that changed. Might list it in a thread.
