Sure. I have no doubt the U. S. likes being the Don and in facts encourages other nations to be merely followers. That still doesn't excuse Europeans from abdicating their role on the military stage. They gladly took the protection. One, if using the mafia analogy, they didn't have to pay for. Both sides allowed it. Sooner or later the U. S. will remove some or all of its protection. Then, the EU will have to step up.

After WWII, having an ally that would help out while things got on track was probably just that. If the US did in fact support the rise of the nazis and waited a good while to get into the action, someone with a shinny hat might be inclined to think that there was some kind of conspiracy there.

Either way, for americans to think the US is being taken advantage of is a bit off the mark.
