Maybe they were made an offer they couldn't refuse?
After WWII, having an ally that would help out while things got on track was probably just that. If the US did in fact support the rise of the nazis
and waited a good while to get into the action, someone with a shinny hat might be inclined to think that there was some kind of conspiracy there.
Either way, for americans to think the US is being taken advantage of is a bit off the mark.
