Its the reducing people and their arguments down into precanned, 1 word phrases. I am not a complex person at all, it seems. I am simply a "conservative", "liberal", "American", "Southern Racist", etc, etc.

There's no need to know me....you can simply open a can of "Ad Hom" and summarize everything about my existence into one detestable word.

Those who point fingers at people and call them disparaging names are the very people who are offended by words.

Words DO have an impact. Look at how many are offended by Obama's not calling the terrorists Islamic radicals.

I invite criticism for being a snowflake. I can handle it.

Snowflakes rule.

The term irritates me. I love snow. Everyone is what the term describes to a greater or lesser extent. We are all protagonists of our own stories, stories that only we will ever read or understand.

Pretty much the reason I just stopped posting...again. Every issue instantly becomes the fault of whatever political party holds a different view from a poster. There is no more discussion, just regurgitating bullet points or memes.
In reality most issue are more complex then "them dam liberals" or " them dam conservatives".

I do not know if the moderation staff is overwhelmed, or possibly resigned to allowing much of this for revenue, but I just find it incredible how far it has gotten especially with T&C term 15g:

15g.) Political Baiting: You will not engage in politically-charged rhetoric, politically-inspired name-calling, and related right-versus-left political bickering while Posting in any topical forum or discussion thread on the Websites. You will not alter political candidate names or party affiliations in order to insult or deride the opposition.

I especially scratch my head at the last line. I do not think it has EVER been enforced.

The only reason I visit the site any more is because of a few posters that by feat of strength are still fighting the good fight with reason and logic. This is not just posters I agree with, there are posters with views opposite to mine that I respect.

Side note: bigfatfurrytexan, maybe it is faulty memory on my part, but It seems you have mellowed quite a bit over the years and you are one of the few posters left that I genuinely enjoy reading.

as a community, we moderate ourselves. if you see it, and its not aligned with T&C, alert it. The alerts do not go unread, i can promise that.

and a membership that votes with the complaint feature is a membership that is moderating itself.

Are we using the term snowflake in the same context i'm using it the way its being branded to describe a generation of earthlings who are offended by words to the point of a breakdown and resort to using freedom of speech and critical thinking to destroy their opponents opinions and their right to freedom of speech at the same time claiming to brandish intellectual superiority over their peers all to feed their own inflated self image and ultimately their grotesque and utterly offensive egos!

You dont seem to be the type who is offended by words ?

your grand daughter doesn't look old enough to be offended by anything as the world as we know it hasn't indoctrinated her young tiny mind , also whats her interest in reading have to do with people being easily offended ?

Oh yeh my point still stands how are we as a species meant to survive if we cant handle a few words thrown at us and need safe spaces ?

say an alien race comes here tomorrow and they arent benevolent , how are we meant to defend ourselves if our next generation are offended by words!

WORDS for # sake

Survive? words?

Does this not seem outlandish to you?

Words don't kill. Words don't hurt. in fact, that is exactly the silliness you are making fun of: that people can feel actual hurt over words.

And then we get the hyperbole that, somehow, the future of humanity relies on its ability to weather harsh words????

Jesus, the irony is palpable.

As a lurker, my advice for ATS is to stop using words on threads. Because eventually there will be none left.

I stopped posting almost entirely and rarely come back here for this very reason.

ATS used to be a place for a higher level of discourse than most other forums on the net, and now it's basically at a YouTube comments level, except instead of bored 15 year old, here it's bored and bitter 55 year olds - each one with an axe to grind. Part of the problem may be that there appears to be at least one member of the mod team here that seems to both support and low-key engage in this sort of behaviour.

ATS is always at its worst during election seasons, but this one has killed ATS for me.

So:

"Im a Trump supporter, lets end the name calling"

You do realize that your pick is the king of doing this and yourself and others give him a pass on this CONATANTLY

Here's a scenario: Anyone who starts spewing hateful garbage to my granddaughter is going to get twice the thrashing I'd give out if the same was done to any other member of my family. I've always been the rather physical type when my ire gets up. Not a most productive personality trait, but it has done me well for a lot of years and I'm not one to pick fights, but will always stand up against ignorance..

You think words don't matter? Apply that thought to the various doctrines and propaganda forced on populations by the likes of Mao Tse Tung or Adolph Hitler. You think those words didn't matter too? How about the KKK's historical racist diatribes?

Sorry (once again, because I'm Canadian), but I reserve the right to criticize ignorance any way I choose. The first indication of ignorance out of someone's mouth is name-calling. I think it stinks and, thankfully, many of those names are against the T&C's of this website, to be avoided at all costs.
