Sorry your comparison is quite ignorant.

Hemophilia and cuts?

First off hemophilia is not a fear it's a condition. Why would a hemophiliac fear a cut? Well that is an obvious answer.

Hemophilia cannot happen to an individual through brain damage, however autistic conditions CAN happen through brain damage.

Please, shut up. Before you regret attracting the attention of our members who actually have autism, or family with it.
The ones that know about it would agree with me. I don't fear their attention at all.

2. On WHAT evidence are you asserting that Ms. Gifford is faking speech difficulties?

Ok, you might actually have me on this one.

I don't think she is faking, I just think she is using her disability to gather support.

AKA using her disability when she wants it to be relevant.

*ETA - I brought up the autism issue, because her condition is comparable to autism. You didn't answer me the knowledge you have when it comes to dealing with autistic people though. So I can safely assume it is zero.

This thread is a hoax, a lie, unless you can show a recent video of her speaking correctly.

I am trying as best I can to find a video of her slipping up, a little bit of a pain on this phone.

So far, either she is an incredible actress and extremely consistent in her method or people are making crap up about a woman who survived serious trauma and is out speaking in public despite all odds.

I don't agree with her politics or choice of... associates. But other than that, I'm seeing a strong woman not letting her disability prevent her from living the life she wants. Loughner doesn't get to steal that from her and she seems intent to prove it.

Or maybe I'm completely naive and she deserves an oscar.

Did you see her head and that rehab video in the hospital? She has gun control all wrong but that's one tough chick.

That's the truth, I don't know if I would have the same strength to persevere through something like that.

We can call her out all day on her craptastic views on Gun Control or any number of things but we should at least give her the credit she is seemingly due. Definitely seems to be one tough cookie.

Also, I'm a huge proponent of music therapy. So I particularly enjoyed seeing how much that seemed to help her.

I think this is an important distinction in your argument that we either overlooked or you didn't state.

Certainly, I believe this woman could be amazingly strong and fighting all odds and speaking publicly despite a crazy brain injury while at the same time using that injury in a manipulative fashion.

I will personally concede this is entirely possible, though still no direct evidence of such. But this distinction certainly makes me hate you less!

I kid. Thanks for the clarification.

I can live with that.

It's the only reason I raised the thought about autism.

Autistic people do indeed use their disability to their advantage, and in this case the brain injury is similar.

I don't have any conditions like autusm, brain damage, head trauma etc. but I would imagine these people feel like they have a huge disadvantage compared to the rest of the population. Not sure I fault them for using whatever means they have for advancing their cause/life.

Her "disability" was CAUSED by a gunshot wound to the head when a sick individual fired on her while she was at a low key political event.

How is it irrelevant for her to address what happened to her own body, her own life, and very nearly ended it?

Now these trolls come along and claim "she's faking it!" with ZERO PROOF and, certainly, malicious intent to smear her name and thus attempt to invalidate her so that those who don't like what she says can simply dismiss her outright, rather than be moved by human empathy to, perhaps, listen to what she says.

I don't think anyone needs to worry about her playing for sympathy. I think they rather should worry about those who would contrive to make her into a liar, a con artist, and erase the amazing strength of will and effort it took for her to recover as far as she has. It disgusts me that they have done this. THEY are the liars, con artists who hope to destroy a woman's reputation because they don't like what she says.

Seriously. Why is this trash even on ATS??? Hoax bin this!!

It's one of the reasons they do.

They aren't dumb people, they grasp everything we do, just either at a slower pace or in a different sense.

They also know most of society will shrug off anything they do because they are handicapped.

Autistic education is very interesting.

She's harmless, people need to leave her alone. Hopefully she is doing this for her because it gives her some happiness and not being manipulated.

Look, what I know and do not know about autism has no bearing on this thread, or it's topic. The entire discussion on autism, as others have also pointed out to you, is off topic here. I posted on the thread to discuss Ms. Gifford, not autism. There is a time and place for that, and it is not here, unless you assert that Ms. Gifford has autism, and I don't think there is any evidence to support that.

If you want to make a thread about autism, do. There are member here who are caring for children and other individuals who have it. It can be a devastating pervasive developmental disorder, for the individual, as well as their care providers. It is a broad topic which is not pertinent here, nor is my experience with those who have it.

That's really all I have to say about it right now, other than I agree with others in that you might do well to drop the topic on this particular thread. It's not pertinent.

Where did I say I thought this was true?

I questioned the whole thing.

The strangest part is how some people are interpreting.

Yes it does. Her brain injury resulted in becoming an individual that has difficulties that are similar to autism.

You think hiding away and running from it because it is talked about is a bad thing? I know now you have absolutely zero interaction with autistic people. They like to talk about it usually, because they learn person by person.

I don't know if you know, but there are several camps run every year for autistic people, children and adult. People with brain injuries often attend these camps as well even though they aren't diagnosed autistic.

So, If you want to drop the autistic part of the discussion simply admit you don't know what you are talking about.

Your argument is flawed.

So let's look at what you are really saying, carving away the "autism" distraction.

You are attempting to speak to Gabby Giffords character with all this "people with autism use their disability to their advantage," talk.

You are saying you think she isn't faking a disability, but is shrewdly calculating how she can gain sympathy from people. What proof do you have that Gabby Giffords is so lacking in character? You are only a hairs-breadth away from the full accusation that she is actually faking the problems she has with language.

(And you use a generalization about "people with autism" using their disability to their advantage for sympathy as some sort of justification for this. I DO know about autism, as my son is severely autistic. He would love to communicate but he can't - he doesn't stay non-verbal in order to get sympathy...)

So where is your proof that she is a terrible person? Did she do this sort of thing before the brain injury? Or is this just a supposition you are making because you have some vague notion that you shouldn't be sympathetic to people with autism/brain injuries because they are attempting to make you feel sympathy to gain advantage over you?

Ah. The ever-elusive fox. Why would you even post this garbage?
Why even consider it a worthy topic of discussion? Because you enjoy seeing people react?
