Some families are suing a landlord because they were asked to provide valid I.D. and prove they are in the U.S. legally.

The claim is, asking for a Social Security Number, a passport and/or visas is targeted discrimination.

The landlords claim they need to make accurate criminal background checks.

Illegal Immigrants Sue After Landlord Demands Documentation For Housing

Four Latino families filed papers to sue their Virginia landlord Monday after he threatened eviction due to illegal family members living on the premises.

The civil rights lawsuit filed by families living in Waples Mobile Home Park in Fairfax County, Va., claims it is discriminatory to require a social security number for residency. The landlords at the mobile home park are requiring residents to provide either a social security card, passport or valid visa with documentation to renew their leases, reports The Washington Post.

The lawyers representing the families, from the Legal Aid Justice Center (LAJC) and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan law firm, say the actions are targeted discrimination which disproportionately affects Latinos in the community. All the families involved in the lawsuit have lived in the park for at least two years and have at least one family member without legal residency. The landlords say they need the documentation in order to conduct proper criminal background checks.

If the landlord can demonstrate he does this with all prospective tenants then he has nothing to worry about. If he is doing this only because they are brown people he is pretty much up S***'s Creek.

Criminals have rights.

Law abiding people don't.

What's so hard to understand?

Where the heck is ICE?

Now it's discrimination to ask for proof you are legal?

Things are bad.

Isn't he just "discriminating" against criminals?

Well, land lords usually run credit checks, and in this case background checks, on new tenants and they do need your social security number to do that so nothing new here.

But, apparently these families have been living in their mobile homes for 2 years now? Why all the sudden do the landlords need it? Unless they are targeting them? I suppose the landlord can get away with it because technically he could say he needs these things to renew the lease. I guess we'll see what happens in court.

The tenants have been living in his park for at least two years. He is all the sudden requiring the paper work to renew their lease.

Technically, yes. But if he only asks non-white people for documents he is also breaking the law.

This is very similar to asking each candidate different questions in the interview process.

If the landlord suspects that the tenets are criminals, isn't it his right to do so?

Otherwise he'd be breaking the law if he is harboring criminals.

Law abiding citizens AND criminals have rights. That's how our justice system works, boils down to rights. You know, it's kinda an American thing.

Although, them rights have slowly been fading away. That all said, we have the best justice system money can buy because people and greed but unfortunately for these mobile home living Latino families they are poor.

Even foreigners have rights in America. True story.

Then I think he may have a problem. Unless he is asking all if his tenants for documentation as their leases come up.

How many rights do illegal aliens have?

(not looking for an answer, because it isn't a fair question)

The hell if I know. If he suspected they were making meth in their bathtubs I'm sure he's totally ok with calling the police. If he assumes they're "criminal" illegal immigrants why is he taking "justice" into his own hands and not calling the immigration department, ICE? Sounds likes he's discriminating against them the more I think about this. Thanks!

But, if he's requiring his entire park to provide this paper work every time he renews leases then he should be okay. I really do wonder what the diversity of this park is? A mixture of everyone?

You should email Obama. I hear he's a constitutional lawyer. Imagine the thread you could create if you got a response, even if his assistant or a bot wrote it!

Myriad, actually. They're called HUMAN RIGHTS. Remember those? These aren't soulless shells we are discussing here, they're living, breathing human beings with wants, needs and problems of their own.

Simply being an illegal alien does not negate your humanity.
